Ok so I am looking for a pistol to carry for my CCW. I am a faithful 1911 owner and love the way they shoot. I originally started looking for something that was close to that in a 9mm. I found the cz-75. I have yet to shoot one but from what everyone says its a 9mm version of a 1911. My problem is I would prefer to carry a .45. I stand 5'7 and the only person who cant tell I am carrying my 1911 is someone who is legaly blind. So are there any .45<non revolvers> out there that are good for a CCW, and if possible something close to the way a 1911 feels?

if not is a cz-75 a decent choice for a 9mm?

why not just CCW a 1911?  they are slim, you like shooting em, and there are a lot of setups that are orientated for improved CCW (such as no-snag features, lightweight frames, etc)

the key to proper concealment is the rig; get a nice, quality, comfortable IWB holster (CompTac CTAC/MTAC, Threat Sol UCR/Desantis Scorpion, Milt Sparks VMII), a dedicated, sturdy belt, and some looser clothes

while a full size or commander sized 1911 would be my prefered setup, i will admit that there are some times when i cant properly cover it up w/ the current clothing; so, i'd also consider a 1911 w/ a commander sized slide and an officer sized grip: ETA: or more than likely, one that has a shorter bbl setup (like the colt defender, kimber CDP, etc)

note: shorter 1911s tend to be a little more picky w/ everything and a closer eye needs to be kept on em to ensure they cont to work; also, velocity can be critical for diff loads, so consider that also

the CZ-75 is a great 9mm; BHPs would be my prefered 9mm, all steel platform though

full size kimber w/ CTAC:

The defender and CDP do not have commander length bbls, they have 3" bbls.

Anyways the I'm only a little taller than you and can conceal a fullsize 1911 easily, you just have to get a good holster and belt....

yea, i know, just trying to put some "in the ball park" examples out there

i couldnt really think of any more popular and less than 1K 1911s styles w/ such a setup...

I use a modified Kimber Ultra Carry II when I just can't carry a 5" 1911.  It's a little fucker, but extremely mechanically accurate IF you can shoot.  Of course, I can't shoot it with the same degree of accuracy at very high speed as I can my 5" guns, but it's a tradeoff that is sometimes necessary.

I like a Yaqui Slide holster at 3:00. Works for me with any size 1911. Of course the 3 inch Colt New Agent works really well.

I believe this is the right answer.  Although I love commanders I think the full 5" hides better with the extra 1" of slide length against your hip pushing the grip into the hollow of your waist further.  To me the short slide guns can end up just hanging on your hip and not contouring to your body.  My favoriate carry rig is a 5" Wilson lightweight in a Threat Solutions UCR.  YMMV  JD

I am the same height as you and I like my 45 too. If I'm not carrying my 45 I carry my S&W442.
In WA as long as it's covered it's good. I really don't care if it prints as long as it's covered.
So many people now carrying phones and butt packs and all kinds of crap on there hips I figure my pistol is just another lump under a shirt.

while i'd let mr SGB answer, since its late tonight, its a Milt Sparks VM II

expect to pay ~$125 and wait time says about 6 months (more like 2-4 if you are lucky); they are great IWB holsters, and i'd never admit it until i tried it

Springfield makes a 1911 designed from the ground up, around the 9mm. So, it's considerably smaller and I think you would be pleased with it.

Glock makes the G36, which is as close to a 1911 as Glock will get. (So far anyway.)

The Cz-75 is a beautiful, well built, workhorse. If you are considering one, I would highly recommend it... You can't go wrong!

No matter what pistol you carry, you will need a good holster. A good belt, bought from an online mfg. such as Don Hume, Milt Sparks, etc. is also something you will need if you expect to wear it on your belt.

One thing that you can try for now, while you wait for a new holster to arrive, is to go down to your local shop and pick up an Uncle Mikes open top "InsideThePants" holster. It is a quality holster for the price ($12) and will help you to conceal your pistol well, but make no mistake, it is not a high dollar holster, so don't expect the answer to all your problems... But it will work. Make sure that you have a belt of no more than 1 3/4" and only one layer! (If you try to wear it on a double-layer belt, it will not clip on.)

I carry in the waistband and can conceal my P220 in everything from shorts and t-shirt to dress clothes. It's about the same size as a M1911A1.

Comfort is one thing, but maybe you just need to work on the way you dress. Carrying a CCW usually means paying attention to what clothes you wear, and how you carry.
IWB is the easiest to conceal, IMO.

For comfort, stick with single stack .45 pistols unless you wear really loose clothes, the extra width can be harder to conceal.

Try a 1911 with an Officer's sized grip.
I'm 5'7" too and the shorter grip made all the difference.
The Colt CCO and similar sized 1911s are perfect IMO.

Tucker Gunleather's "the answer" is an extremely nice holster if you don't like the feel of kydex against you.

I carry a Colt New Agent. It is the same as a Defender with an alloy frame and 3" barrel, but blued and a different sighting system. Not quite as easy to conceal as my old Kahr PM 40 but still very easy to carry.

You didn't say what your current mode of carry is.

You can still have a great belt and holster, and still not achieve your concealability goals.  For example, a pancake holster or duty holster with retention will almost always be obvious.

FWIW, I believe the 1911 is very easy to conceal, more so than most other guns, due to its slimness.

Get a good* IWB holster, preferably one with "FBI cant".  This puts the butt more in line with the vertical plane of your body instead of just hanging out there like an uncanted holster.  A good* belt is a must too, and it should match the belt loops of the holster to properly stay in place.

I don't understand - if you like the 1911, and you want to carry a .45, why not carry the 1911?  I like the full size government model myself, but sometimes that can be a brick to carry.  I've got a Lightweight Colt Commander that is just super.  Very nice package for carry.
