I don't shoot competitively, but would like to improve--there's a lot of room. Seem to have run up against a basic vision issue that limits getting any better. Wear glasses (bifocals) for distance and reading and everything is fine. Shooting, however, is another issue. Can't focus on the target, front, and rear sight, adequately enough for any real good shooting. The optomitrist implies there's not much to be done except to optimize the basic correction. No problems with a red dot, or scope. Just the classic iron sights. At 25m, nothing is in focus. Any mature (aka older) shooters who have the problem, and if so what, if anything, did you do about it? |

I have a similar problem! I have progressive bifocals, and shoot USPSA, and when I started, I'd tilt my head back to get a good focus on the front sight, as I have been told/trained that's the best place to focus. From that posture I could "see" the target, though it was very blurry. (Neck got kinda stiff, too! )I finally broke down and asked my ophthalmologist to write me a 'scrip for that would give me a solid focus on the front sight, then got a basic set of glasses with that prescription. I could only wear them for a bit, or get a tad sea-sick, but my scores improved considerably. I shot about 3 matches, plus practice, then the next match, I forgot to wear them one stage, and shot that one even better! So... I finished the match, and every match since, and have done pretty well. The front sight is still fuzzy, but I find it has become more "instinctive" to line everything up now. I think maybe really getting used to using the front sights trained me to know what alignment meant, and now it's pretty automatic! You might try it. A cheap pair of single-vision glasses can be only about $75 or so. Some folks had suggested finding some reading glasses like at the drug store, and trying them on 'til you find one that gets your focus right. My astigmatism is too bad for that, but it might work for you. A more costly, but maybe better option, is some guy that sells purpose-made shooting lenses, with the bifocal cut into the top of the lens instead of the bottom. I couldn't find them quickly on Google, but maybe someone else can recall them. Bill |
