Looking for a small and light carry gun and have narrowed it down to the Springfield Armory XDsc and the Smith and Wesson M&P compact.  None of the ranges around have any that I can shoot.  I have handled both and they seem equally comfortable in the hand.

Any thoughts from people who have chosen between the two?

Thanks

I traded in both my XD tactical and XD sub due to issues with acquiring spare parts, SA beginning to require customers to pay out of pocket for shipping on warranty repairs (with possible reembursement if they decided it was warranted) and problems with the sub rusting. I'm a training junkie, and decided to go with an extremely robust brand of handgun, more amenable to field repairs then the XD.

I also recently spoke with a smith who related an incident with a XD grip safety malfunction, resulting in a live round in the chamber which could neither be fired nor cleared.

I sold my XD9SC after the first couple hundred rounds, as I didn't find it particularly amazing, and that the barrel block had lost most of its bluing by that time. I realize that this area of the weapon is subject to alot of wear, but after 200 rounds, that's just ridiculous. I now carry a fullsize M&P and concentrate more on my holster, as I've figured out, finally, that it's more so the holster than the gun that's in it as far as concealability goes. That's not 100%, but it's alot of it. The M&P is a great gun all around, and the compact feels better to me than the XD, though I don't have one. Try to shoot both and decide what you want.

The Compact M&P is a great weapon. My wife carries one daily and has had no malfunctions. I carry the full size and love it.

OK, yes, the belt as well. I was speaking more from the concealability aspect, than from the stability aspect. But yes, the belt is equally important. Thanks for the correction.

Have you dry fired both?  Personally I can't get past the M&P's hinged trigger.  Feels like shooting a water gun.

I don't have any experience with the M&P, but do with the XD/9 service, and  the subcompact 9MM. I shot the sub compact 9 bi tone last night at the range. No malfunctions and relatively pleasant to shoot. Not too worried about wear and tear. It's a CCW gun, not somthing to spend the day at the range with.

neither

got rid of my XD for another glock, I have a 26 and I love it

If you MUST get one of those two, go with a NEW XD for the melonite treatment, you'll be happy you did when your not scrubbing surface rust off

M&P, I have one and really like it. It conceals very easily and shots great as well. My dad has the XD Sub-Compact and it is a little to blocky-bulky for me, but YMMV...But the M&P is a great gun.

I like the hinged trigger much more then the glock or XD version of a trigger safety

The XD. The guts on the M&P still look like a Sigma to me. Everyone says they are different but  I have not seen anyone say what was different and I have had zero problems out of four XDs.

If you look at the 2, they are way different.

I've owned both, the only thing that the 2 pistols have in common are the great ergonomics

It's all good. I was just conceding your point, which is indeed valid.

So what is different in the guts?

I prefer the XD, it fits my hand better. I have 2 myself and have steered 3 friends toward them, they are also happy with them. One of the guys also has a M&P that he likes but he carry's the XD. I shot his M&P it seemed OK, it just wasn't comfortable and my follow up shots were not very good.

I have an XD40SC, and it's an awesome little gun
I'm not a fan of the Sigma-style hinged trigger on the S&W, others don't mind it.

+1

i love the ergos of the M&P and the XD vs the glock, but for simple simplicity, durability, parts/mags/accesessory availability and price...glock is the one

of your 2 i'd have to go w/ XD, but then i was an XD owner for a while and i havent owned the M&P
