Thinking about getting a hi-cap .45. What is the pros and cons of the different models? Thanks |
|
there are several: SW autos 4506, etc: all steel, cruddy trigger, a little complicated w/ the take down, parts are nil; overall, they are a nice KISS auto for the money M&P: dont know if they are out yet, but they are just like thier MP line--poly frame, better ergos than say the glocks they kinda immulate; parts are nil, mags are going to be ~$40 a piece Para-Ordinance: P-14, etc: great triggers for what they are, mags are expensive, parts are nil; great shooters HK USP/Tactical: mags are expensive, ergos are pretty dang good--very traditional like w/ a 1911 style handling; i have noticed that recoil on these is a little more stout than other .45acps and the stock USP trigger sucks (long and heavy) in comparison to the Match trigger Taurus: dont kown, b/c i dont like any of the taurus autos (except for the PT1911); h/w, i have heard hits and misses w/ the PT911(?) SA XD: great gun, great ergos w/ the glock style setup (different mechanisms though) and the trigger reset is longer than glocks, and its grip is probably the most compact/small in size for a double stack .45; mags are pretty cheap, but parts are nil but SA has great CS--imo, a great buy for its costs Glock (21/30): imo, the best value on the line for the money for its reliability, cheapness and availability of mags, parts and accessories; good recoil characteristics, short trigger reset, but cruddy trigger and the grip can be a tad too big/wide for some w/ small hands; enter the 21SF of course, you have the double stacked 1911 style .45s, like STI and SA...heavy and wide and expensive imo of the ones i can think of, i'd opt for the Glock, HK Tactical, and maybe somewhere, the SA XD |
| BEST depends on what works for you. The XD, Glock, HK and some of the doublestack 1911s are all pistols worth owning. You have to decide what you want in a pistol and go from there to see what is best for you. I prefer the XD .45 for me however it may not be what you are looking for and then again it might be. |

Hi Cap .45? You mean like a Thompson? Pro: Sporty, you'll be the envy of everyone. Con: Expensive, getting parts might be difficult, your hands will hurt from loading mags. _________________________________________ ("I said fire a shot across her nose, not up her nose!"--Dark Helmet, (wtte), "Space Balls") |

I think that the XD or the Glock is probably the best way to go. The STI is a bit expensive for me. The Para Ordance guns look nice, but the price for mags seems a bit to much to me.I like the 1911 45's, I have a few Kimbers which I like alot, but I don't really seem to care that much for the Kimber Hi-Cap. I am going to check with one of my local ranges that rents handguns and see if they have the Glock or the XD. Can any one tell me how the trigger on the Glock compares to the XD? I have never shot a Glock .45, but have looked at a few and the width seemed a bit wide for me. It's cool the have the new model out. Thanks to everyone for their input. |
the trigger on the XD and glock are kinda different; their pull weight is ~ the same stock (~5.5lb) XD's trigger, physically, feels better--its contours just fit the finger better (at least for me) it breaks pretty clean, but it has some initial play before the break; the reset is noticibly longer than the glock while the glock trigger's contour and angle sucks in comparison to the XD, its overall better imo; the reset is a LOT shorter; there is less play in the initial pull moreover, there are more smiths and armorers who will work on a glock's trigger as well as the availability of there being different disconnectors and springs to adjust the weight and pull/reset on glock triggers (3.5 glock, 3.5 ghost, 8lb NY trigger, etc) lastly, there are parts for glocks; good luck getting parts for XDs the new G21SF's ambi mags and slightly smaller grip circumfrance is nice; h/w, the old mags dont work which sucks |

I have to say that I have a Para Tac-4 that I find a great defense gun for the 1911 lovers. It has a very similar design and feel to the 1911 (without the beaver tail) but also has the LDA (light double action) trigger. I love this trigger. I find it a great compromise between the longer trigger pull of a DA and the shorter trigger pull of a SA. I also have to say that I have an HK USP that I also find a great tactical weapon. I would lean towards the HK if you want a purely home defense gun but lean towards the Para Tac-4 if you want something you can also carry. And finally, I just thought I would say something about Sigs as I am also a big fan of Sigs (I have 5 Sig handguns and a Sig 556 rifle). Although most aren't high-caps they are great carry guns. In .45acp, I have both the P220, P245, and the GSR 1911. All three are single stack designs which are ideal for carry guns. As for the p220 and P245, their magazines are interchangeable. The P220 takes a standard 8rnd magazine but will also take a 10rnd magazine. The P245 takes a standard 6rnd magazine but will also take the P220 8rnd and 10rnd magazines. The biggest cons to the Sigs are their price tags. A used Sig will run close to what a new M&P or Glock will cost you. |

We are on the verge of .45acp overload with all the new guns coming out. I am waiting to fondle a FNP45 before I make a decision, and probably going to have to finger a 21sf as well. The M&P45 only holds 10 rounds but it feels really good in the hand and looks like it will carry super nice. |

+1 on the XD45. I got one a few weeks ago, have fired ~ 500 rounds through it. Flawless operation. Great accuracy, too: one-hole groups from about 15 feet. Easy to dis/reassemble, clean, etc. Pretty reasonably priced, esp. compared with some of the competition. Mine was $511.00 + tax. |
