I want a gun for an ankle holster and I'm not really sure which route to go. What I've though of so far is the S&W J-frame, Walther PPK, or maybe a Kahr. Any suggestions?

What about a keltec, G26, Springfield __*?

*I can't recall the name, but it is a 1911 built around the 9mm and is quite small.

Relatively inexpensive 357mag Taurus mod 650 (essentially the S&W 640, w/ enclosed hammer) around $219 new, works very well in the best ankle holster on the market, a Renegade which IIRC ADCO sells.

Ugh...I HATE ankle holsters.  If you have never worn one, you might be disappointed.  You can't run real well in them, and it keeps the weapon far from your hand.  This is a problem for both access when you need it and for weapon retention.  I'd rethink that carry choice.

In an ankle holster, and yes, I've used one for years in summer weather,  weight is a huge factor.  2" .38 or a keltec sized pistol are your best bets.  Glock, springfield, Khar, are all going to be too heavy to be comfortable or too bulky to be practical.  I have had the best luck with the Beretta Tomcat in this role.

If you're looking for something small, light, accurate, reliable and sweat proof then get a Glock 26.  If you want a revolver then get a S&W J frame.  For pocket or ankle carry I'd chose the J frame, for IWB I'd chose the 26.

G26 gets my vote

a good wheel gun or steel framed Khar would be my other choices

Now do I want a S&W 442 or do I want to pay double for the .357? Is it that big a deal when it's only a 2"bbl?

I prefer a wheel gun for ankle carry since i live in the sticks (one paved road in town other than the highway) so lots of dust.  I would say check out prices on Taurus or shop around for a used Colt agent or cobra.  I prefer the colt snubs not so much for the extra bullet but they have much better sights and I regularly do duty gun qual courses with my snubby instead of the snubby course.

Now I'm thinking Keltec. Does anyone know the ballistics comparison between a .380 and a .38 special?

I have a 386PD S@W 357 mag, 7 shot. It has a scandium frame and titanium cylinder so it is very lightweight. It kicks like a mule with full power 357 loads in it. The muzzle blast is even worse than the recoil. I think the barrel is 2.5 inches, or maybe 3. There is a pretty good ballistic advantage in a 357 mag compared to a 38 special, even in the short barrel. The good thing about this gun is, even if you shoot it at the bad guy and miss, you will probably set him on fire with the blast if he is within 25 feet.
ETA, the locks on the new smiths are a pain in the ass but are very easy to disable.

Sig 228 or Glock 19

I am guessing you want to go with a smaller calibier (9mm,  38, or 380) from your list.

Seecamp LWS32... Or even the LWS380... (Same size pistol, just slightly larger hole in the end of the barrel.)  One of the most concealable pistols available, absolute top quality.     You might as well carry the best.....

Best Wishes,
