I'm looking at the 8 round Chip McCormick 1911 mags with the extended baseplate.

Are these any good?

I prefer their PowerMags - had a couple shooting stars and they wore out in a couple of years.

I have the 8rd Shooting Stars as my range mags.

Work flawlessly, springs are fine after being used many times. I left a few loaded at capacity for 6 months, no problems.

The Chip McCormick mags are some of the best.  No worries.

My experience has been a bit different than those above.

Disclaimer:  I shoot ALOT of pistol and I regularly engage in what most would call abuse or torture with respect to my gear.  Having said that, if I cant kill it, its REALLY good stuff.

I quit buying McCormick mags after the THIRD time I hade to send my set of 8 range mags back.  The feed lips would spread just enough to allow the follower to eject itself into never-never land when I dumped an empty during a reload.  Of note, all but one of these was the old style and NOT the powermag version AND McCormick replaced them ALL free of charge.  Other problem I had was that when I was practicing reloads -- DRILL: load one or two rounds in a mag, load pistol, shot, reload with a new mag with one or two rounds, repeat..

Problem: when reloading at slide lock about 50% of the time, the first round in the mag would jump out of the mag and either keep flying out the ejection port or cause a jam. I never had this problem with a fully loaded mag.

Now in McCormicks defense:  They're mags are less expensive. They gave me ZERO grief about replacing the mags.  I was shooting about 1500-2000 rounds a month at the time and abusing the shit out of my mags.

I also have several Wilson's mags, subjected to the same treatment, and have NEVER had any problems...

If you are going to buy McCormick mags GET the POWERMAGS they are superior to the screw on base pad style.

I've had my McCormick magazine screw up.  I don't like the screw ups.

As was said 4GMA: I also have several Wilson's mags, subjected to the same treatment, and have NEVER had any problems...

I have a few that I only use at the range, works fine 99% of the time. But 99% is not good enough for me to trust in my carry gun or home protection gun. For serious times, I only count on the Wilson combat mags (8 rounders) which have been 100% reliable.

Sounds like a commercial, but it's the truth.

McCormicks work fine in my Colt Commander, but have had problems with them in my LB Premier 2... Decided to spend the money on Wilsons instead...

Wilson-Rogers or Wilson Combat? Everyone says Wilsons, which ones?

As I posted earlier...

I've been using the McCormick mags since the came out and before when they were Devel. Never had any problems when I was shooting IPSC and still use them as my carry mags. Between 91-00 they have been kept loaded 100% of time.
