Hey all. I have been looking into buying a pistol for sometime now, and was wondering if yall could weigh in on the three choices i'm looking at: Taurus PT1911 .45 Springfield XD45 Smith & Wesson M&P40 Could yall tell me what your opinions are on this and which i should or should not get. Thanks in advance!! |
| I have no experience with the Taurus, but it will probably run like any other 1911 which means if you want an SA 1911 it will be good to go. I have fired both of the other pistols you are interested in. I did not like the trigger reset on the XD. It has a nice crisp break, but a long reset. The M&P is going to be available in .45 ACP, so you don't have to live with .40 if you really don't want to. The .40 M&P felt like a 9mm in terms of recoil, and had a fairly Glock like trigger without the creep. |
My personal choice of the three you have listed would have to be the XD45. My reasons: I like the grip, I have held quite a few of them and they all feel good in my hand. I like the grip safety..it reminds me of my 1911 that I also like to shoot. I like the 14rd capacity...more rounds is always better IMHO. Everything I read and hear about the XD's has been great so far. My buddy owns one and thinks it's a nice shooting pistol. I have never shot or owned one so I can't speak from personal experience. -John

I have had my XD-45 for almost a year now and what a gun it is. It is accurate, great to hold.....feels like my 1911's and 13+1 capacity certainly leaves nothing to be desired. Shot to point of aim right out of the box.....couldn't ask for much more. The gun will literally feed rocks if I could get it into the magazine. I have had several of my friends shoot my XD and then go and buy one for themselves. I carry mine about 50% of the time IWB in a Brommeland Max Con V holster. The other 50% of the time I carry my Wilson Combat 1911 4" Professional. On the other hand, I bought my son a PT-1911 for Christmas....his first handgun and his choice of brands. It is a gun that far exceeds it's worth. If it had been my first 1911, I doubt I would have bought any other brands. having all the bells and whistles, great accuracy and slick 4.5lb trigger out of the box, for the price, is unheard of. He has just under 1000 rounds downrange and has yet to experience any problems. I never much cared for the looks of the M&P, but recently I shot the 9mm version. If the .45acp version, whenever comes out is half as accurate, it will be a good choice as well. The one I shot is accurate an has almost as good a trigger as my XD. Hopes this helps, tex45acp |
I would get the XD or the PT1911. I have two XD .45S and they are greeeat. |
they sure can--check out SA's website or midwayusa for XD mags--roughly ~$17-$20 now, XD parts, thats another story spare XD parts are just about NON-existant and SA wont sell any to the general public; they will h/w honor thier warranty and work on any problemsthen you get a simple problem like a buddy of mine got w/ his XD9: 2 seperate springs in his grip safety area broke TWICE; obviously, he sent it back the 1st time it broke last yr and got it back in working condition--all he paid was the UPS overnight shipping and the re-fininsh job he wanted FF to this past Dec and his grip safety spring just broke while he was holding his gun ![]() grip safety is not working (it still shoots fine though), but SA wont mail him a replacement spring--instead, they want him to send his XD back--$40 overnight shipping for a lousy, d**n .50cent spring ![]() since then, i got rid of my XD9 and got another 1911 (taurus PT1911) and G21 while the XDs are great shooting guns, many improved features over a glock and others, it sucks w/ parts and accessories of your choices, i'd go for 1911s, the taurus which imo is a great 1911 for the money--its not as "re-fined" or nice as my kimbers or SA loaded, but its been 100% and a great shooter |

I own several 45's: I'd get the SA M1911 in a heartbeat: 1) Classic 1911 platform 2) Wide variety of aftermarket goodies 3) Lots of sight/finish options 4) All metal Downside vs. XD & Glock 21: Price: between 30-50% more cash. Weight: Possible downside: Barrel length: up to one inch longer Disassembly: Infamous Slide stop needs to "come out" |
spare XD parts are just about NON-existant and SA wont sell any to the general public; they will h/w honor thier warranty and work on any problems
