a S&W model 10 with the taper barrel?  I have always liked the lines of them and I do like the feel.  Right now all I have are autos--Ruger P95, MKIII, CZ75, Kahr P9.  I had a Blackhawk convertible.  So including my long guns I only have 2 calibers--9mm and .22LR.  Would I be silly to add one.  Will I actually enjoy having it or will I end up selling it in a year because the novelty wore off like with the Blackhawk?

Careful. The trigger on the Smith will spoil you. Single-action is a dream and double action smoooootthhh. Go for it, although I prefer the bull barrel Model 10s myself. If you like the tapered then get one. You will not regret it. If you get tired of it in a year then drop me a line. Maybe we can work something out.

This one belongs to our next door neighbor and she refuses to sell it to me....Dammit!

Wrong??? Havens no!

I have a H&R 926 breaktop in both .22 and .38 S&W just because I liked the way they look.

They are not a 'Smith' but they satisfied the itch at the time!

I would be a 100% dedicated 1911 carrier/shooter...

Were it not this fondness for wheelguns I have. They are a mythic symbol wielded by cowboys, old beat cops, John Wayne, Dirty Harry, homicidal badguys in 80s movies... you name it. The only drawback to them near as I can see it is the craving you develop for more of them in different calibers.

I know about the triggers being nice.  I have shot a recent production 686 and 10 which are both rentals at the local range.  Right now the gf likes the feel of .38spl through the 686--weight eats up the recoil.  But there is still the draw of the older 10.  Maybe it is all the old movies I used to watch.  Now for the important part.  How much should I be paying for one?

Anywhere from 120.00 for a tired old security company beater to 500.00 for a brand new heavy barrel model, I didn't see a new lite barrel listed. There are tens maybe hundereds of thousands of them out there just start hitting the gun shows and shops.

If you want the real deal KYimports has PRE model 10 model 10's instock, 4in tapered barrel good condition 149.99.

Those would be fine with any modern ammo as long as it isn't +P right?

Yes. I don't remember what year S&W started useing the model numbers. If you got one of those you could always contact them with the serial # and find out about +p. But if you want power buy a model 19 357mag.You buy something like this for a nice little plinker that could also do a little work if needed, aleast IMHO.

You really want to eat up recoil?  Try 148 gr Wadcutter out of a 686.  Recoil is negligable, and it produces very nice clean holes.  It shoots so soft I use it as the first firearm for training a new shooter.  I think you will enjoy the 686 or the Model 10 very much.

She is a new shooter and enjoys the MKIII.  But I want her to have something she can actually guard the home with.  She likes the .38spl 158gr reloads through the 686.  But I just like the look of the 10 better.  So I will get what I want just for playing around with and maybe experimenting with home gunsmithing.  And she can get what she wants seperately.
