Posted this on the Hide, but thought some might find it interesting here.

My PD does several training sessions a year that are voluntary, but you can come out and shoot and they provide the ammo. Today I went to one where we were just shooting steel with different scenarios. We also had a "dueling tree" where you went up against another shooter.

We started on the dueling trees. On my second run (I lost on the first), I was kicking the other guy's arse, and when almost finished, I couldn't hit crap. I looked harder at my front sight (on my Glock 32), and noticed it was just flopping around. It had come loose, and was just barely hanging on. It flopped around freely, and I have no idea how it didn't come completely free of the gun.

These are aftermarket sights (Mepros) that were put on immediately after I bought the gun. Upon inspection, it became apparent that the guy I had put it on (a glock armorer) didn't loctite the screw in, and it just backed out. I've had the gun for maybe 2 years, and have shot it alot, and this is the first problem I have had with it.

Well, the range guru didn't have the tool to put the sight back on, so I took it off, and kept shooting. I have practiced unsighted fire quite a bit (mostly within 7 yards), and we weren't shooting past about 12 yards so I figured what the hell, I'd give it a shot.

Suprisingly, it affected my shooting little. On the full-sized silhouette (sp?), I was 100% - I could just bang away in my normal shooting position and get good, fast center hits. We even did 4x4 (4 shots on 4 targets from the holster) drills in about 7 seconds - and I was 100% - again, at about 12 yards. On the 6" plates at the same distance, I was shooting about 80% - but had to take a bit more time than I had been - and before I was much closer to 100%.

I probably went through 4-500 rounds without sights, and am well pleased with the gun's performance without them. Kinda makes you realize how much position and body mechanics play into the whole shooting thing. Either that, or I have found out how to use the force (the dark side, mind you).

Once back at the PD, I had an armorer I trust put the sight back on. He told me to try not to get into any gunfights on the way home (I said I would see what I could do).

Woulda taken pics of the gun with the front naked, but wanted to get the hell out of there since it was my day off, and I didn't want to end up getting volunteered for anything.

wow.

I'd like to try shooting without front sights...

The only small problem is that it's red loctited

Easy - put black tape on it - works fine.  Start close, make sure your body is right.

I do alooot of point shooting from different distances (7 to 20yds), I'm shocked that your front sight lasted that long without some locktight, I put so much on mine it will take a torch to ge it off

The first time I put my Ameriglo Tritium sights on my G19 that happened.  Anyway, I just field stripped it right there and took it completely off and went about my business shooting.  I also had no trouble hitting my target 8 inch circle at 15yds with it.  Pretty suprising... Anyway, I got loctite on there now and no problems.

ps - It took about 6 rounds of Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+ before the front site was loose the first time
