I traded my G.I. Mil-Spec 1911A1 in for an XD40, and I don't have a holster for it yet... But, about two weeks ago, I was out shopping and had it tucked in the waistband of my pants, and it was REALLY hot that day, and I was sweating pretty good. When I got home, I looked at the left side of the slide (right handed, so the left side of the slide was against my skin) and saw rust... Has anyone else experienced something like this as well? There was also a very small amount on the left side of the front sight base. I got it all oiled up and cleaned off, but I was shocked to see something like that. |
First off, shame on you. Never trade a 1911 off for anything  Next, your sweat is very salty. Of course it'll cause light surface rust. That's why they make holsters.  Parkerizing and blueing are not very corrosion resistant. If you want to carry holsterless I'd suggest the Armory Coat (for the 1911s)finish. I believe the newer XDs all use the melonite finish which is supposed to be very rust resistant. Maybe you got an older one? You could always see if SA will coat the slide of your XD. Wipe it down with a silicon protectant. |
LOL, you know what Burkey, I think I'm starting to really like ya. Its nice having another HK buddy around here. Anyhow, Curare, I was making that statement as a joke, hence the smiley up there. I didn't mean to hurt your mangina. Nothing is a copy of anything. Last time I checked, my HK had a normal grip angle, great sights, a slide made from the toughest steel on the planet, a good trigger, a magwell that wouldn't flex when squeezed, accuracy of a finely tuned 1911, and reliability equal to that of your Glock. Please, take this as a joke again, because thats what it was meant to be. Glocks are a GREAT weapon, and the next on my "to buy" list. Glock 19 with night sights, and a crap ton of mags. Can't wait. Scott ETA- to add something useful to this post instead of letting it go too far OT, the XD's rust issues have been corrected AFAIK. There were issues on the early models, but supposedly they have been corrected. |

I'd rather have a rusty XD that I can shoot, than have a glock which I can't because of shitty ergonomics. Just get it coated and don't worry about. From what I understand the melonite finish is only on the .45 but they're supposed to be using it on the 9 and .40 in the near future. ETA: +1 million about the HK marksman |
| I've got three XD40s and they have all rusted at one time or another. The best way to stop it is to have it coated with some kind of paint. Short of that, a couple coats of automotive wax should go a long way toward helping. I haven't found anything, including Eezox, that will really protect against rust once the gun has been handled any at all. |
Are you saying you have a vp70 with a light trigger pull? It must be the only one. |
Nope, just pointing out that the polymer frame was not a Glock idea. It was started by HK. So, how could it be a copy in any way? Nor do I see any "copying" when I look at any of the firearms he listed above. They're all pretty damn different. |
It had just as much relevance as your statement that the HK USP/SigPro/etc was a copy of a Glock... Theres no technology being copied anywhere, nor are the controls copied, or ergonomics. They are all unique. The only point of commonality they share is a polymer frame. In which case, your statement would have been more accurate had you said copy of the VP70, as it was the first production polymer framed handgun. I guess none of this is very relevant, but atleast my statements above follow logic and fact. |
I agree. Glocks maybe reliable, so is an XD. ALL my friends that are glock fans that have shot my XD, agree it feels better and shoots just as well. And I heard it takes glock 17 seconds to make a frame from a block of plastic. No wonder they feel so shitty in your hands. |
 Well I guess you have to decide whether or not it is worth it to refinish a slide or not. If it is then the pistol is worth it. Mine is a stainless slide so I have no problems. I have never seen a finsh rub off a stainless slide while my Glocks finish is starting to rub off. LOL Personaly because I like the pistol better I am willing to spring for the slide refeinish some day. I wish they had better sights but other than that I am very happy with my XDs.

| Xds are notorious for rust(maybe a problem they fixed with new ones?) Mine did the same thing and I sent it into Macs shootin irons for $36 and had it recoated. Problem solved. check out hs2000talk.com(now xdtalk?) They have a whole section dedicated to rust problems, solutions |
