A friend of mine has a Colt 1991 A1 pistol. I want one real bad :D , but anyways I am not to familiar witht the Colt pistols and he is having a hard time breaking it down to clean it. He has had it a few years and never field stripped it  He does not have the manual. Is there anyone that has a URL that shows how to strip it down and clean it? Something with pictures would be great, that show exactly how to strip it. I don't want to see such anice pistol go to waste because it is not taken care of. Please post info or links that you think may help the situation. Thanks. P.S. We are both up to date of how to actualy clean the gun, what to use, what to clean etc. etc. He just needs to now how to strip the gun so he can clean it. |

The 1911 and 1991A1 are extremely easy pistols to field and detail strip...once you know how. How far does you friend wish to go, just a field strip for cleaning? Or detail strip to take it completely apart? First, he can contact Colt and get a manual. I can't find an illusrtated site right now, but I'm sure once probably exsists to direct your efforts. I'll try and talk you through it. 1) With finger outside trigger guard, remove magazine, check chamber insure firearm is unloaded 2) repeat #1, twice 3) allow slide to travel back into battery (go forward and then lower hammer safely 4) depress recoil spring cap and twist barrel bushing to the left CAUTION - cap is under spring pressure, do not direct toward face(can often be done by hand, if tight bushing wrench required.) 5) allow cap/spring to move forward in controlled manner. Remove cap from end of spring. Some people will remove the recoil spring at this point/others will wait. 6) cock hammer 7) retract slide approx. 3/4 of an inch until half moon cut in left side of slide is alinged over top of slide stop and push slide stop through, right to left 8) run slide forward off frame 9) turn slide over, remove recoil spring guide and recoil spring if still in place, lift up and move toward rear of slide 10) turn barrel bushing to right, should be free to travel out of slide 11) push barrel link toward muzzle 12) slide barrel free from slide to the front Okay, that's as far as you need go for cleaning (field stripped) other than removing the grips and cleaning under them. I was doing that from memory, without a 1911 in front of me, but I think that's all the correct steps, in order. Re-assemble in reverse order. If I missed something and somebody else catches it, tell these guys!! |

Thanks that should help a lot. I think for now just field stripping will be fine. My main concern (for him) is that the gun is acting up and I am sure it has a lot to do with the fact it has not been cleaned and maintained correctly. He bought it new so I don't know what happened to the manual. Recently someone was in his back yard and he got thte gun and chambered it and went out back, it turned out okay since the person was gone but when he came back in he realized the bullet never chambered, he racked it again and it chambered the bullet but it made me worry quite a bit. The last thing anyone needs is a pistol that is not reliable. I know the Colts are great guns so that is why I think a good cleaning and checking up on the gun would be good. I will probably try and do it for him the first few times so he gets the hang of it. He is my Bn'L BTW. |

Good, hope the info helps. Sounds like a good cleaning and lubrication are needed. Pay special attention to areas such as the barrel link pivot, the locking lugs, the feed ramp and the chamber when cleaning/lubing. Here is the link to Colt - www.colt.com/colt/ and their contact info, have your B-I-L contact and request a manual, asap. www.colt.com/colt/html/g_contactus.html |
