curious to know if i buy a .40cal barrel and mag will i be able to shoot .40cal using a 10mm 1911 frame? |
No what I'm saying is that the mag you have for the 10 mil will fit in your pistol(your'e not changing out the lower are you? Yes just buy the 1911 barrel!!! What I'm saying is that a .45 mag and a 10 mil mag are designed to hold a cartridge of the same lenght just different cal!!! You can put seven .45 cal in the mag,and eight 10 mil (or .40)in the same mag!!! Do you have a .40 S&W mag or a 10 mil mag? Point is you don't have a .40S&W mag,you have a 10 mil mag! So you may not have a problem useing the 10 mil mag with the shorter .40 shell!!! I have had problems ,so I have modified the feed lips on some .45 mags! Buy the new barrel,and you probably will not need return spring(the 10 mil and the .40 are close to power)! I have a 10 mil,and bought an OLY .40 S&W NM barrel! I just put it in and went to work(only had to use 400 grade emory cloth to make it lock up nice and smooth!! There is no drop in and play ! But yes a .40 S&W barrel will make your 10 mil into a very ordinary shooter!!! Bob

Well yes after misreading your post,but even though even if you can .40 cal mags for your unknown 1911(they would be very costly)! Why not make or reconstruct ones yourself??? Bob

The Brownells catalog will list Metalform mags in .40 cal, these will work fine in any 1911 frame. There is a spacer in the back to make up for the shorter .40 round. Sometimes the 10mm magazines will work with the .40, YMMV. If you reload, you can seat the .40 bullet out further, say to 1.200", and 10mm mags will definitely work. You will just need a new barrel & recoil spring. I use a 14lb for .40 & a Nowlin Delta Elite system in the 10mm. Find some IPSC shooters in your area, they'll be able to tell you all you need to know about this. STI's & Para's in .40 dominate this sport. |
P-dog has some good info,and be sure when ordering your new barrel that it comes with the locking link and pin,or you will just get the barrel!!! Bob

I am another who has put about 50 rounds of 40 S&W through my Delta Gold Cup using the Cold 10mm magazines. (I don't recommend this, just wanted to see if it was viable in an emergency) I doubt if you really need a special magazine with a spacer. Start off with what you have on hand. If you have feeding problems, you know where to go. |
