I tried a search for this. No luck.

Want to find a chart of something that will give cal. and then refer it to mm.

Like a 9mm is the same or close to "What cal."?.. and so on.

Thanks

9mm = .357 cal
9.5mm = .380 cal
10mm = .400 cal
5.7mm = .220 cal
.45 = .45... nothing else matters
1 inch = 25.6 mm

everything is based on the conversion from inches to millimeters

9mm is .355.

1 inch is 25.4mm

There is no .380" bullet. .380s fire the same bullets as 9mm/.355".

Quoted:
9mm = .357 cal (actual diameter is .355)
9.02mm = .380 cal (actual diameter is .355, 9mm Makarov is 9.2mm, which is why you can't reload .380 or 9x19 bullets in 9mm Mak cases)
10mm = .400 cal
5.7mm = .220 cal
.45 = .45... nothing else matters (11.43mm)
1 inch = 25.6 mm

everything is based on the conversion from inches to millimeters

Quoted:
7.62mm = .308cal (same as 7.62x51, 7.62x39 actually uses .311 bullets, same as the .303 British)
5.56mm = .223cal

then there are the calibers that are misnomers.  for example the modern .44 is really .43 (even .444marlin) and .222rem is actually larger than .223rem.  and what is often referred to as 8mm mauser is really 7.92mm.  .38spl is really .357 in diameter and even though 9mm is .355 it can still be fired through the same barrel as .357mag or .38spl--as in the ruger blackhawk convertable.

unfortunately the cartridge dimensional drawings on reloadbench.com are currently offline.  they are working on getting them redrawn using cad.  hopefully they will be up by the end of the year.

.38-40 = .400-.401
.44-40 = .427-.429
,41 colt = .38x IIRC
.41 mag = .410 (the only one where the name = the caliber exactly)

Do they make that 1inch or 25.6mm in a Glock or 1911 frame!? LOL That would end the "What is the best man stopper "debate for sure especialy if it came in a balistic tip.

Try mm divided by 25.4= caliber.  Viseversa for cal to milimeter conversion.  See below.  Now you'll never forget.

9mm divided by 25.4 = 0.354cal.

.30 in. (caliber) multiplied by 25.4= 7.62mm

mm times 4 = caliber is what I use. Close enough for govt work!

9mm x 4 = 36, i.e. .35 caliber
11mm x 4 = 44 cal
etc.

not to be a complete ass but the 1911 isn't even an inch thick so its gonna look pretty funny with a 1" diameter barrel on it?

In the case of the .38SPC it used to be a .38" bullet back in the old days.

From what I understand when they used a heeled bullet like the .22 LR uses.  In theory this would mean if you measured the exterior of the .38 Special case it should measure .38 roughly.  I haven't checked this out for real.

I thought .38 Special was always .38 special.

FWIW, 38-40 is actually a 10mm/.40 cal.

Correct, when it was a black powder load it used a heel based bullet so the diameter was the same as the case at the mouth.

thats also why the .44mag is really .43.  when the .44 was created in the 1870s? it was actually .44 and the cartridge looked similar, but larger, to the .22lr.  but the russians had a step in the cylinders for their revolvers and when we brought the .44rus over it was smaller than the domestic .44's but it got the name somehow.  i can't remember how though.

.44 mag is nominally .429 with jacketed bullets, although lead ones run over.

I have no clue about heeled bullets. Its news to me and very interesting.

We will just put a beefy slide on it and make the frame a little wider too. Nitro for the propelant will probably work.

Depends on how heavy it's loaded
