I have a friend who's a little vagina beaten, and he wanted a Glock 26 real bad without having to pay for one.  Anyway, he came over last night with a Colt SAA in caliber 3840 to trade for my Glock 26.  I don't know anything about these guns, but its an original, his wife's aunt gave it to him.  The story on the gun is my buddy's wife's aunt had it after her husband died in 1974, he took the gun in trade.
I did a little looking around on the net, and it seems this gun may be worth $2,000-I don't want to keep it but I don't want to get screwed when I sell it.
Can anybody direct me to a site that  will tell me the value?

Go to SASS.net.  Alot of the Cowboy action shooters there use authentic Colts and could at least give you an unbiased opinion.

Most shops have a book with the serial numbers and dates of production.

The SAA I'm working on right now (.45 Colt) was 1874 mfg.

Oh yeah I've got it-he's not a gun nut at all, just wants the Glock 26 for when he gets his Texas CHL.  It was given to him, so he feels like he's not out anything, and he got a Clock to slip under the wifey's radar.....aint that sickening that a grown man has to hide his toys?

Here's a site that has Colt firearms serial numbers up to 1978.
www.proofhouse.com/colt/

Prices on Colt SAA's vary wildly, depending on the year made, actual condition, caliber, barrel length, and any special factory options like grips, etc.

Because of all the various factors involved with SAA's, often only an expert can give you a valid price.

Wow, that's useful.  I went to Red's in Pflugerville and was just talking to the guy and he pulled out the book with Serial Numbers.  But an online resource is great!

Colt SAA usually start at $1K and go up, especially the older generations, in almost any condition.
