I'm thinking about converting my 1911 to shoot 45 super. Who has experience with 45 super? Is it worth it? I'm a reloader and I shoot my handloads almost exclusively.
My para ordnance has a ramped barrel and I think it will provide adequate case head support. I'm adding the following: Wolff 28 lb recoil spring + extra power firing pin spring Wolf 28 lb Hammer spring EGW Flat bottom firing pin stop Wolf Magazines with Extra power magazine springs Please let me know if I am on the right track. I've done some research and read the Real Guns article but there's not a lot of definitive info out there. Also picking up 500 Starline 45 super brass. What are some good sources of load data? |

I've been reading up on it too...... I'm interested in doing it also. |

Your recipe for the build is good. I run mine with a 24 lb guide spring and 26 lb hammer spring, Flat bottom pin stop, and a XPower firing pin spring. Mine does cycle cheap 45 ACP ball as well, but doesn't lock back on the last round since it's slightly short stroking. You will likely have issues with running standard ball ammo. But hotter self defence ammo, 185 + Gold dot, works great in mine and cycles strong and locks back every time. I used the Power+ mags and have had no issues with the super, regular 45 or 460Rowland. I'm not Familiar with the barrel support on the ramped Para's but the case web is thicker on the 45 super, so you might be fine. Post a photo if you want that psuedo evaluation from here. |
| OP, I've ran my converted .45Super for a while. I would mimic Getnlwr's recommendation pretty much spot on. I like a 30lb main spring but everything else is right up my ally. As for a ramped barrel, not necessary. My Springer loaded stock barrel has never, ever experienced a bulged case head nor any slight signs of a rupture. The 1911 has a pretty good case head/chamber support to begin with. That and the fact .45Super case head webbing is much stouter than the standard .45acp is to begin with; you won't have any problems from "Starline" brass that much I can tell you. Giving you don't do something stupid like use the wrong powder(s)... If you are planning to run Buffalo Bore ammo I can assure you, you won't have any problems! The .45Super, with 255 grain hard cast truncated lead loads is a hell of a woods pistol that can easily be dubbed for street/normal carry. Set up using Getnlwr's recommendation and you will have a pistol that recoils like a .45Acp but punches much harder. Just ask questions here and one of us .45Super junkies will get you up and running right! |
