KZ-45 Compact

I don't know how you can shoot those tiny 1911s.  I can't hit the broad side of a barn if I was standing in it.  I know you want a compact, but you might want to look into a commander length instead.  Just a thought.  MJD

I wouldn't carry a 3 inch barrelled 1911.  If you can't carry a 5 inch 1911, carry some other caliber and another design.

How about a 4"?

Kimber Pro Carry

Best of both worlds and it will work reliably unlike your 3" choices.

I also prefer a 4-4.25" inch gun for a CCW, although I often carry a 5" 1911 during the colder months.

I don't like the REALLY short 1911s-3" and under BS. I do have an Officers ACP which is a reliable shooter, and it used to be my CCW gun.

All of those look like an inch or two of barrel are missing.

Wait and buy one with a whole barrel.

I regularly carry a Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry - if you get one, do yourself a favor and get the factory night sights they make a big difference in low light.  My Kimber has been dead nuts reliable from day one with anything I fed it from 200 gr. lead semi-waddcutter target loads to 230 gr. Hydroshocks and Golden Sabers.  I don't shoot the lighter weight +P ammo in it because I don't want to risk damaging the alloy frame with super hot loads.  The gun is so light and handy you hardly even know it's there - makes carrying concealed a joy.  My previous attempt at a 3 inch barrel .45 acp was the Colt Officers ACP - it is much more finicky about feeding than the Kimber - basically could only trust it 100% with hardball and it  feels like it weighs twice as much.  Hope this helps.

I have fired the Kimber Ultra Carry a few times.  I shot is surprisingly well.  It is a handfull, but not anywhere near as bad as an Airweight J frame.

Damn.

What is it about the 1911?

How is that this design looks like a work of art, while other styles, like the revolver, are..... well............ just handguns.

Shivan, can you tell me what the weight of the gun is? The Kimber website won't tell the specs. Also, may I ask what you paid for it? (approx). I am looking to get rid of my Kahr PM9 for a 45, or a more reliable 9mm (maybe Sig P229?)

I don't have a functional scale anymore.  I traded for it.....I believe the value was $850ish with a couple mags.  I got it almost like new.

I have thought about getting one of the Ultra Carry's but can't bring myself to do it.

I will likely carry a .45 forever, in some configuration.

Short barreled .45s are more useless than short barreled 5.56s!

The .45 ACP is not a good short barrel cartridge.  A .40 or a 9mm can pull it off, but the shorter barreled .45s rob the cartridge of too much velocity.

From an expansion point of view?  Or from a penetration point of view?

I thought it was only from an expansion point of view........

I'll still take a .45" hole vs. a .35 or .40 hole.....

I carry Remington 185gr +Ps in my 4" Kimber, as I did in my Officer's ACP. My reasoning being the added +P velocity would help off-set the shorter barrel loss.

I carry 230 gr. Hydroshocks or Golden Sabers on the theory that if they expand great - if they don't it still equals the performance of hardball which has a pretty good track record as a stopper.  YMMV

This Wilson Combat CQB Compact  caught my eye. Im gonna check out a few Kimbers. from the poll, it looks like more people are leaning towards the kimber instead of wilson combat.

i would personally take either the Kimber or Springfield.  Ive owned both Kimbers and SA, but only 5".

5" is fine for me, for regular hip carry (i even carry the Kimber TenII hi-cap IWB), but i have had an interest as of late for replacing my j-frame with a mini-1911.

I carry a full size S/A but my next 1911 will be a Colt due to desireability (mine).

I've been carrying a Kimber Ultra Carry for about 3 years now and have probably 3,500 rounds thru it.  I find it to be relatively easy to shoot.  If I do my part, I rarely miss.  I do find I have to pay closer attention to sight alignment, and that does slow things down slightly.   That said, if I had it to do over, I might go with something with a 4" barrell.  Barrell length is easy to conceal compared to grip length,  so the ectra inch wouldn't matter at all for concealability.

On the down side, mine is slowly disintegrating.  See my post in this forum on the subject.  My experience seems to be unusual, but it certainly is frustrating.  In Kimber's defense, they have been very prompt in taking care of the problems.
