Just switched homeowners insurance and wanted to add coverage for our firearms. The agent called today and said he'd need what type and serial numbers. Anyone else insure theirs? I can understand the request, but am I being paranoid about being a little uncomfortable about giving the serial numbers?

I bought a policy through the NRA. No pictures or serial numbers required.

Decent price too. I paid about $180.00 for $20,000 worth of coverage.

once you go over a certain dollar amount they ask for the info on serial numbers. I have actual replacement cost so they dont give you the old line about how its not worth anything since its 20 years old. be careful theres a lot of shady policies out there so make sure its replacement cost and read the print. regular insurance it doesnt matter what you say its worth they adjust the price and thats what you get so a gun worth 1200 thats 15 years old may only get you a check for 300 bucks if its stolen. read the policy close. insure it for really what its worth and update the info yearly and dont over insure it does no good and jacks your rates up.
my policy for 38000 will pay the amount i listed and I saved sale tickets to prove so I will get what I paid or the cost of a new one and some ak rifles you cant get anymore so price them correctly.

You'll want to have the firearms scheduled onto your policy. To do this, you'll likely need either a copy of the original purchase receipt or an appraisal. Needing to provide the serials isn't uncommon, especially with high value guns. Without the firearms being specifically listed on your homeowner policy, most companies limit the amount they will cover in the event you need to make a claim, especially in the event of a theft. Price will very based on your insurance company, but shouldn't be to expensive. Don't worry about giving your serial number to your insurance, most laws prevent them from sharing this info with anyone, including the gov't.

I would go with another insurance company to insure your firearms. One that didn't ask for serial numbers and specific type...

Why?

State Farm carries, I believe, $2,500 of automatic coverage for guns. Above that, get a personal article policy. Zero deductible, claims don't effect your homeowners policy or go on its claims record.
It's how I insure my guns and optics. Separate personal articles policy for my wife's cameras and her jewelry.

I believe I pay around $16/month for $15,000 +/- in Guns, optics, electronics, and jewelry. no deductible.
I gave them serials for guns, appraisals for jewelry, and receipts for her Macbook, DSLR and lens etc.

You guys are too paranoid

ETA: no appraisals or receipts needed for guns. They let me pick arbitrary values based on my customization as well.

My Allstate policy covers $3000 worth of firearms without any additional fees. I am getting a quote to raise the coverage to a realistic number.

I've read a few stories here of people getting their policy cancelled when insurance finds out they have a bunch of guns.

Is that subject to your homeowner's deductible? I bet that 1/2% or $1,000 deductible is going to hurt when you have a loss on just guns

It also will raise your homeowner's rates and get you that much closer to being canceled when you have a wind claim. Just FYI

FYI, if you have a NFA gun trust it needs to be named as an insured party or have its own policy.  Guns in the trust belong to the trust, not to you as an individual, and won't be covered by your insurance.

I added my guns to an additional rider on my Home owners.

The original policy covered $500 and I asked the agent what about the other guns.  He laughed.

He then said that he needed the type and S/n's and I told him that I would give him the last 4 digits of the S/N.  He was OK with that.

Good stuff

In my office, my collection might be in the top 5 largest and my assortment is shameful compared to the ARFCOM collective.
We have some clients with some nice pieces though.

I really wouldn't care about giving serial numbers, I'm more concerned with buying and selling and getting the full value on the guns listed.

#1 thing, make sure you have a good safe bolted down, and insurance secondary. Store pics and serial numbers of your weapons elsewhere.

Backwards haus
fire and floods eat up safes.

Insurance first. Insurance will cover during transport, at the range, the shotgun you leave in the corner of the closet, etc
