Sold off my Shield 9mm a while back in favor of my XDS 45. Still love the XDS 45 and feel it's the better handgun, but kind of just missed the Shield anyways and never truly compared them head-to-head.
The 9mm Shield felt "snappy" and my particular example's trigger was just "ok". Since the 9 was so snappy and the .45 of the XDS so manageable, I figured it was best to throw a "snappier" 40 in the mix to match my FS M&P 40. Just ordered a Shield in 40. Let's see if this one sticks as obviously there was something about that first Shield that has lingered in my mind. P.S. What's wrong with me? |
| its your money, buy whatever you want. But sometimes I have a tendency to think the "grass is greener on the other side", if you will. Arguing with myself if gun X would do something better than gun Y. Now that you've got both, enjoy them both for what they are. |

Why not just get the XDS in .40 when it comes out? While families of guns are fine (M&P FS, M&P C, Shield), I'm not one to invest in multiple calibers in the exact same model. The role of both the XDS and the Shield is the exact same, I just like having handguns that are different in looks and behavior. The Shield is a fine firearm, but the first go around it just didn't do it for me. Not sure why I think that my overall opinion might have changed, but I've been thinking of it again and decided to give it a second chance. Any of you guys shoot and own both already? |

I saw a used 9mm Shield for $350 today. If I wasn't out of state I probably would have taken it home. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Picked mine up for $399 with the transfer fee. Would've been even happier at $350. I had picked up my 9 at $400 OTD, too, and made $50 when I sold it. Guess I'm technically getting the 40 at $350 as a result.
I've been reading a lot about the XDS coming back post-recall with a heavier trigger. Hope that it's not too bad as I really like mine as it is and was one of the reasons the XDS won me over in the first place. Guess maybe it really will be a pocket-carry battle after I get the XDS back and compare against the Shield. |

Any of you guys shoot and own both already? I've shot an XD-S 45, XD-S 9mm, and a Shield 40. In general, I prefer the Sheild ergonomics but prefer the XD-S trigger. The difference in 9mm, 40, and 45 is about the same as with any other handguns...9mm is the lightest recoiling, 40 is snappy, 45 is more of a "push" than "snappy". |

I put off buying a shield and bought other sub compacts instead (BP9CC, Nano, XDS, G26). I scored a Shield for $399 shipped when I sent my XDS back for the recall. When they finally do return my XDS they will have an uphill battle competing against the Shield. It lives up to the hype. Nice trigger, and it shoots really well.

Like I said, I've got my shipping label for my XDS sitting right in front of me. Once it returns, it will be a shoot-off between the new Shield and the XDS. If the trigger is truly hindered by the new SA modifications, I'm wondering if the XDS will remain my fav. Pull is supposed to go up roughly 2 #'s from pre-recall. Weak. |

Here's a link to a review of the new vs old XDs:
Link to side-by-side review of original vs upgraded XDs ---------------------------------------------- I have a Shield and a recently upgraded XDs, both in 9mm, and would like to offer a few comments an observations. I generally agree with the findings in the above review. After about 100 rounds of trigger break in by dry firing, my XDs still has a little heavier trigger pull than what I remember the gun was like originally. It's nowhere as stressful as a double-action revolver trigger or (for example) an LC9. However, I just bought a Lyman digital trigger pull gauge to make some objective measurements of these and my other guns. If I find anything interesting or unusual after testing them, I'll post the data in another thread. The subjectively perceived trigger break characteristics of my repaired XDs is significantly better than the original version (so much so that I am not worried about memory errors on my part in comparing my memory of old XDs to upgraded XDs). It is also clearly much better than my Shield's spongy, gritty trigger, which many others also have reported. I can't tell exactly when the trigger will break, somewhat like my 1911 trigger, and this helps me to avoid flinching, etc. I personally value this improved trigger break a lot, but then I'm a strong 1911 trigger fan, and that's an apples vs oranges comparison, for sure. Depending in part on what my measured trigger pull weight turns out to be with my XDs, I may install the promised (future) PRP trigger upgrade kit, as I would like a slightly lighter trigger pull. I am very reluctant to go below about 5 lbs for concealed carry, based on Mas Ayoob's comments. I don't see how anyone could substantially improve the upgraded XDs trigger smoothness and trigger break characteristics. Especially when compared to my Shield, both my upgraded XDs trigger and (based on direct comparisons a couple of months ago) my non-upgraded XDs trigger feel better to me with respect to trigger characteristics. Thus, I'll probably install the Apex trigger kit and slap some grip tape or a grip tap kit on my Shield. As another matter of personal preference, I like the texture of the grip in the XDs much better than the Shield grip - the Shield is just too smooth to me, especially when wet. For now, I'm *very* glad to have my repaired XDs back to me and I am especially thankful that mine arrived free from any significant issues. If I can get my Shield and my XDs up to their full potential (mostly by trigger kits), it would be really great to have two optimized pocket 9's. Even as they are, both guns are highly desirable in my book and both work well for concealed carry in particular. As you might guess, the thumb safety on the Shield doesn't bother me at all since it is much too stiff to turn on accidentally. Similarly, I never notice the grip safety when shooting my XDs, and I personally like being able to depend on a grip safety to provide an additional measure of safety while reholstering. I have a similar "I never notice it" reaction to the grip safety on my 1911. As always with these types of issues, YMMV. Good luck in all your gun choices! |

Put the Apex Shield carry kit in your Shield. Problem solved. Problem staying solved. I'm actually doing that tomorrow Getting my preferred warren tactical sights added makes a big difference, only other potential change would be some texturing/trigger guard undercutting. |
| The 9 XDS guns we received back from recall service have much heavier triggers. I'm glad I got a shield while I waited for my XDS. Springfield gave everyone a free extended mag and an apology letter. My XDS is going up for sale, I'm keeping my shield with APEX trigger. |

I really like the Shield in .40... but I like my M&P40c almost twice as much. With a Comp-Tac Minotaur holster and a Beltman belt, it hides nice and is comfortable. OP, if you think the Shield's trigger needs refinement then Apex solves that problem. If your XDs comes back with a heavier trigger... I don't know if there is an easy fix for that. I've got an M&P40 mid-size too. It's the softest shooting .40 caliber I've ever shot and owned. |
