I am considering dumping the XDM and going with the G19. I don't like how the mags are not compatible with the springfields and the overall weight of the springfield. Am I making a bad choice in dumping the XDM?

I think you should try the G19 and if that's what has your desired performance for a pistol, than go for it. This is your life on the line, so the most qualified person to ask is yourself after some hands on with both and weigh it out by the pro's and con's.

I had an XDm 4.5 and ended up selling it for a 19. My reasons ranged from mag interchangeability, absolutely no gunsmith wanted to touch the sights, didn't really like the trigger, and the size was a bit much for me ( I have smaller hands). Also, when I got it in 2011 it was still fairly hard for me to find XDm specific accessories (holsters, lights, holsters, holsters) seriously every holster I wanted was either only in Glock or XD and would fit with some tweaking. Don't get me wrong it was a great gun but just not for me. My 19 has been amazing though, I just dropped in a 3.5lb connector  and it became my favorite over night. The only down side has been BTF issues every so often but its never had a malfunction so, eh.

What aren't XDM mags compatible with?  Or what mags aren't compatible with XDMs?

I greatly prefer the Glock 19 to near total exclusion of anything else.

I change XD/M/S sights.  What's the big deal?  The very first XD pistols had sights which were fit so tight, they had to be cut out of the slide.  But it was not a big deal, I just charged more.  I still warn XD customers there will be an additional $25 charged for each sight I have to cut out of the slide.  But I have not actually had to do this for years now.  I do a lot of XD sights they are second only to Glocks in numbers.

They are both good guns. Test drive a G19 before you sell your XDm. Go with the one that you like better... or have both

I run a 19 99% of the time
My best freind runs an XDM45

When we shoot together he has an issue with his gun about half the time. From a apples to apples reliability stand point my Glock is the clear winner. Logistically speaking I can work on y glock myself and instal new trigger and frame components, adjust and install sights. I doubt very much i could do that with any XD on the market.
There are a ton of upgrades you can do for a glock and there are more after market products for it.

To me it just makes sense to run a G19 nowadays compared to any other polymer pistol on the market. With the M&P series as my second choice.

As someone who prefers the XDM over any Glock, I wouldn't be in a hurry to make that swap.

I had an XDM with a PRP trigger. It was very accurate and usually ran reliably. The PRP trigger was awesome and had a short reset. I shot it in a number of competitions and high round count classes. The only "problems" that I noticed were that after a few hundred rounds, the trigger would get very gritty and the action would get sluggish. I also had a problem once when I dove into a firing port and scooped a load of sand into the opening at the back of the slide. The gun was locked up solid after that. Not being able to work the slide without depressing the grip safety is also something to be aware of.

The average person should be very happy with an XDM and might never have any problems. But then again, the G19 is a benchmark gun for a reason. You pick.

Rent a G19 first.  I grudgingly accept the G19 is a good gun but I'd put some rounds downrange and see if you like it.

You're not the only person having seconds thoughts about the XD series.
I sold my XD45 Service yesterday.  It's been sitting for years.  I was just an average shooter with it despite lots of practice.
I prefer my Commander.  Easier to carry and my overall shooting is exponentially better.
And it's hard to stop using a carry gun you've trusted for 15+ years.

Im a little biased because I carry a Glock 19 daily.  It is my go to gun.

However there is nothing wrong with the XD either.  I certainly wouldnt dump the XD until you try a 19.  Like previously stated, rent a 19 at the range or maybe one of your buddies has one you can shoot.    You may find that you prefer the XDM.  The Glock is not for everyone.

I have had XD's before and still own one, but the Glock 19 rides on my side everyday!!!

I had an 4" XD Compact .45 for several years as a daily carry piece. I bought my first Glock (a 19) which led to replacing and selling the XD for more Glocks.

I suspect many folks overthink these gun decisions.

Get a gun and learn to shoot it . If it functions reliably and you can find or modify a holster to work at a acceptable level you are good to go.

At this point the most critical thing is to shoot often so the skills and operation are second nature.

Any time someone swaps out a gun there is a period where one is at risk because the function and operation of the new gun is not something that will flow without thinking in a stress situation .

With this all said I am a Glock kind of guy and have been for years. Many times at my club range a buddy will come up and have me shoot the latest and greatest and many have been decent guns but I have not seen anything that would make me consider moveing away from my Glocks .

About half of my buddies are amazed and somewhat insulted that I don't drop my Glock and run right out and buy whatever wonder gun they have decided is the best thing ever.

I have many different Glocks , frankly one of the things that I like best about them is they are all pretty much the same

I love my XDm compact.  Never an issue.  Glock, no thanks.

I had an XDM as well. No complaints really, the gun ran good, was just a tiny bit more accurate in my hands than my Glocks... But I couldn't find mags, and when I did they were expensive, and holsters were pretty much non existant. I realized there was really nothing it was doing better than my Glock 17's or 19's, so I decided to part with it. I do miss it, but it would probably just be setting in my gun cabinet doing nothing if I had kept it anyway...

I think the XDm is the better gun, but of course there's not a lot bad that can be said about a G19 either. Neither are without flaw in my opinion but both are very good overall. I trust my life to the XDm compact .40.

Holster and other accessory availability is no longer an issue with the XDm, but it will still never be what it's like for a glock.

If there's no real good reason to dump the XDm then don't. Renting a G19 to try out will tell you a lot, but the true experience of owning and carrying it can't be had just on a range rental. If you really like the G19 and are compelled for something new, just save up and buy one. Then after several months of evaluation you can get rid of the one you like the least.

Both are good guns. Back when I got my XDM 9mm the deal Springfield was running was just too good. XDM kit, mag holder, paddle holster, adjustible back straps, 2 mags, life
time warranity, a mag loader, plus gun. Then with proof of purchase too springfield they sent you 3 additional mags and a mag holder for free. If memory serves me right all for way under $600.00. Never seen a glock deal even close to that. I bought a Blade Tech, Tech Lock, thumb break level one retention holster made for an XDM, like I said for under $600 out the door. Used a Glock rear sight pusher on it with no problem too get my sights right and never looked back. G19 is a dam good gun also, but that deal on my XDM was way better. 20 to start and then 19 rd reloads thats alot of firepower. But like the man said if you feel better with a G19 go for it.

I have a few glocks and a few XDs, one of them the XDM in .40.  I keep a .357 sig barrel in it though and it runs like a champ.  100% reliable.   Just not small enough to CC throughout the year for me, so I carry my Glocks.  I like the trigger in them better anyways.

Stock G19 vs Stock XDMc their triggers are roughly about the same.   (sucks)
Ghost 3.5 vs PRP.  I personally like the PRP better over the Ghost trigger.

If you were just starting out the Glock is definitely the winner on the Price tag.

Recently took a friends wife out shooting, her husband owns several Glocks with Ghost 3.5 triggers.

Out of the table worth of guns (Glock 19,17,34 / XDM 3.8c, 4.5, 5.25,  / M&P Shield, FS / NH1911 all in 9mm)

She picked the XDM 3.8c 9mm with a PRP trigger.

So my advise is try upgrading the trigger first, before change your platform.

I kept buying and trying different pistols because I wanted something better than a Glock. I keep coming back to the G19 and 17. It's almost to the point that they are all I ever shoot.

The XDm is a good pistol, but count me in with those that prefer Glocks.  Better trigger, easier to work with, shoot great, etc.

Down range I have used the glock. It seemed to run fine and worked well. I just need to sell the XDM.

im not a glock fan,,

but i would go the glock route rather than the XDM, i have a XDM and its a good gun, but i would go for a glock first if in a tight spot,
