I'm wanting to buy an M&P9 but cant decide which model it is I want.
Whats the difference between these two models? 1. Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm Model 209001 2. Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm - No Thumb Safety Model 209301 They both dont have thumb safeties, so whats the difference? Thanks for your help! |

209001 has the magazine disconnect safety. Which is very annoying, but if you find one with the mag safety, it isn't difficult to remove on your own. Advantage is a cleaner looking pistol (no warning on the slide). I also really suggest getting one that was made this year if you can, a few significant upgrades were made. |

Do the newer ones have a better trigger? I've heard the triggers on the other ones werent good, is this true? Older trigger were serviceable, but nothing to write home about. Many tried to compare them to Glock and called them "squishy" and there was very little felt reset. The newer models have new sears, new barrels (9mm), new slide stops, and an altered trigger bar. All this together does make the trigger smoother and a much more tactile reset, plus the barrel helps with some longer range accuracy issues that some people had. The new sear appears to be a little more like the Burwell trigger job, or Apex sear. If you don't like it out of the box, the Apex Tactical upgrades are wondeful. |

Can you tell if it is a newer model or not by looking at it? Yes, but the sear is difficult to tell without removal or knowing that you're comparing the two different ones side by side.
The new ones have a square block plug in the frame near the sear retainer pin, because they unified the frames with the safety/non-safety models. Older models without an external safety had a circular plug where the sear lock would go if it had one.
New barrels have a dimple on the bottom of the barrel right on the block near the front of the chamber, right where the recoil assembly fits against the barrel. You have to remove the recoil assembly to see it.
The newer slide stop has a larger "bump" to it that pushes the trigger bar over with more force. The old style is mostly straight if you look at the bar in the slide stop assembly that goes out to the slide stop button.

| Smith didn't alter the model numbers, and I am not sure if there is a published serial range for the upgrades, they just kind of ran out of a box of old parts, and then opened the new one. So there are some transition models that might not have all the new parts, but if you miss something it is available as a replacement somewhere. You might even prefer the Apex sear over the new S&W sear, or even their trigger replacements, so all would not be lost if you end up with the old sear. From reading the M&P Pistol forum, it seems that some late (very late) 2012 models have everything, definitely guns made within the last 6 months (check the test fired casing date in the box) will have the updated parts. |

All of the upgrades were done in the last year, am I correct? I have my eye on an older gun, but was going to go the apex route anyway, just didn't know when they did the upgrades. This gun is probably 5-6 years old (actually my first gun) but don't remember those little things. This would have the old SHB in it too, correct? I don't have the pistol here to look at it for notes or comparisons. |

Look at the roll pin that keeps the extractor in place. The old ones had a hollow roll pin. Definitely would have the old sear block. |
