Is this rust? I have been carrying it for two weeks and noticed the mags have been having trouble dropping out and going in |

Quoted:
If you sweat on it, it can rust, especially if it's not nitrided metal- although I have seen people with sweat that could corrode a Glock and eat away the stainless back of a good watch. Hopefully my sweat isn't that rough I sweat through the holster apparently because the front part of the slide has been wet.
What could I change on the mag release to fix it? |

What could I change on the mag release to fix it? I guess you could try a heavy oil or maybe paint, but that wouldn't be permanet and might make the release feel sticky. You could have the metal part chromed, NP3cd, or Ionbonded, but that might be pricey just to have a small piece plated. |

Or a coat of rustoleum? |

disassembled it, this is what i found

Any idea if S&W sells a stainless mag release? Or do i need to find a better holster that covers the mag release? |

What kind of holster are you carrying it in? Desantis cozy partner http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x464/Rasgol/IMG_20130704_220517_678.jpg |

OP. I have a Shield9, Wife has a Shield9, we both carry them fairly often, mine is always in leather... And mine does NOT look like that, not even a little. I figured it wouldn't be normal, I have an email into S&W now to see what they have to say about it hopefully they can do something about it

My Kahr PM9 did that as well. One drop of oil on the button every few months will cure it, but obviously you wanna clean that rust out of there first. It just amazes me it built up that bad in a week, I cleaned and oiled everything after buying it and shooting it hopefully s&w will have something good to say about possibly a stainless one |

Update: spoke to a gunsmith today and got looking at it more, the mag release isn't rusting its the bullets that are rusting http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x464/Rasgol/IMG_20130705_173450_293.jpg http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x464/Rasgol/IMG_20130705_173423_855.jpg |

LOL, that's nasty, but it has to also be the mag release. Rust isn't going to spread to surfaces that aren't touching, and there's no way that your ammo is in contact directly with your mag release.
I would probably suggest switching to a different brand of ammo, but the hell of it is that you are going to have to function test the stuff for two different things: reliability in your gun and also corrosion. Another option would be to use a very very light coat of oil on the bullet itself, but of course keep it far away from the primers. Either way, good luck you disgusting Sweatmonger. |

nickle and copper do not produce iron oxide rust. I wondered about that, but I am far from a metallurgist, and college chemistry courses were a long time ago. Regardless of where the rust is coming from, the OP simply needs to maintain his gun more frequently and keep the metal parts oiled up. Again, I have to do the same thing with my Kahr PM9. |

OP: My shield did the same, but not just the mag release. Almost all of the external steel parts (safety, slide lock, serial number plate, rear sight) have had some manner of light rusting soon after I got it. As mentioned above, I removed the rust with a light bronze brush and CLP, then coated the parts in CLP and rubbed it in well several times. Since I have seen no rust except occasionally on the mag release on the surfaces inside the gun. I suspect in that case, sweat gets into that area and cant evaporate or be wiped off, so it rusts it. Everything else, however, has been rust free.
Perhaps S&W should look into using their standard plastic mag release on the shield as well... |
I sweat through the holster apparently because the front part of the slide has been wet.
