I'm considering picking up a compact semi in 9mm. An lgs is having a good sale on Ruger SR9Cs. I really like the way they fit my hand.
But there's also the Beretta PX4 Compact, the S&W MP9C, the Sig P239, the Glock 19 and others.

Anyone have personal recommendations? Which do you prefer, and why?
Cost is an issue, which probably removes the Glock from consideration.

Save a little more and go with the G19.  Trust me.

Out of your list, the ruger would be the last one on it for me.  That's just my opinion.   And really, it doesn't come from experience.  I've never had or even shot a ruger pistol.   So........  But all of the others listed are quality firearms.  As is the Ruger I'm sure.  The others just have a bit better reputation.  I'm not completely sure if there's reasons for it or not.

So........   You might want to try and shoot one or two before you buy.  Are you looking for a carry pistol, or just a range pistol?  Because all of those are smaller weapons.  So I'm assuming that's why you're looking at the smaller ones for carry.  Do you shoot regularly?  A bigger pistol is easier to shoot well.  But harder to carry.

Anyways.....  just some thoughts.  Let us know how it goes.

I've owned a G19 and sold it.  But I'm regretting it right now.  So.......  For whatever that's worth.     The others I don't have any experience with.  My Mom has an M&P 9 full size, and my Dad has the 45.  I think they are great.  I like the texturing on those better than the Glock.  Stays put in my hands better for some reason.  And feels better.  And I think the triggers are better.  But most would say I'm crazy.  I've never handled a compact of that type though.

Glock 19 gets my vote, and I predict the overwhelming majority will go the same way.  It's a bit of a favorite around here.

hard to go wrong with a Glock (i prefer Walthers) but id skip over the 19 and go 26 which is a subcompact...but can use all 9mm glock magazines all the way up to the 30 rounders  = )

this way you can use a mag sleeve that will give you the grip of the 19 (compact) but when you want to pack as small as you can just use the standard 26 mag (12+1 IIRC)  pretty much is 2 guns in one. only down side is no rail....Walther P99C AS is pretty much same size as the G26 with a rail and can use all other fullsize P99 magazines.

Out of those choices the glock 19 would be my choice.
One of the best general purpose handguns made..everyone should have at least one in their collection.

You may want to take a look at the Beretta 92 compact. Not real easy to find but it is a fine carry gun.

Glock 19 is going to be a front runner on here and it is a very good, quality pistol. The newer Gen4 fits my hand better but I chose to go the M&P route a few years ago and haven't looked back.

The M&Pc is kind of in between the 19 and 26 size wise, closer to the 26 in length and 19 in height and felt better to hold, shoot, and conceal. The 3 backstrap options are nice in that they do more than extend the back of the grip, but also feature palmswells and a beavertail. I have the M&P 40c and the felt recoil is less than that of the 23 or 27 and I would assume that would hold true for the 9mm series as well.

I haven't shot the SR9c but I have handled them and though they felt nice and seem overbuilt like most Ruger's, it didn't feel the greatest in my hand. The ambidextrous on the SR9c is a nice feature though.

I would say that you should shoot all of the options you listed or at least all as many as you can.

Glock 19 is the standard based upon size, weight, price, RELIABILITY, there are others but the G19 is a good place to start.

Based on your choices, I'd say go with the G19 if you are right handed and S&W MP9C if left handed.

Unfortunately I went down the Glock road (G19).  Not a fan. So far I have found both the XD subcompact or the M&P 9c to be better suited for me in all categories including reliability (my Glock would jam on occasion; no such problem with the other two)..   To be clear this is for ccw.   My favorite pistol is still a Sig 229 Elite.

I have a few handguns and have to say I have been carrying the Ruger SR9C of late.

Pro's
Small grips  but has 10 round capacity, and although the grips are small I find they have enough grip to make shooting easy.

Gun is accurate

17 round mags available

Cons :
small safety ( easy to remedy )
no aftermarket parts

But for a straight forward , meat and potato's handgun one IMO can not beat the SR9C

G19

Or for smaller option G26, SW Shield, Walther PPS 9mm

ALL of these are rock solid performers

I've HAD 4 Glocks(17,19, 22 and 27) and i'd choose the Ruger.
The Ruger sr9 fit my hand much better than the Glock gen 1-2 guns.

I don't carry either of those and it's not on your option list.

The SR9 really does have a good grip, if one complains about a SR9 grip they should not be shooting IMO

I have both a 19 and a 26.  I carry the 26 much more often as I like to pocket carry.....

Shoot each if possible.

Out of your list, I would go for the M&P9c or G19. I have shot the 19 a bunch but I own and carry the 9c. I wanted it slightly smaller than the 19 and I already had a number of full size mags for the M&P9 so I went with the 9c (and an APEX duty kit).

I went with a M&P 9c for my compact 9mm. I like the ergonomics of the M&P and the way they feel. I have a full sized Glock 22 and my father has a Glock 23 (the .40 of the Glock 19) and I personally don't like the feel of shooting his after I shoot mine. So I passed on getting a 19 or even a 26. I did seriously consider a 26 but I passed.

So I'm all Glocked out after using my Glock 22. I do keep it as my home defense gun though. Glocks are good guns but one is enough for me.

I did have some buyers remorse for not getting a Shield but I can always add a slim 9mm to the collection later down the line. The current slim 9mm craze needs to die down soon though. I figured that everyone spent their cash on panic "assault weapon" buying spree but I guess not.

You do realize people have different sized hands, proportionally longer or shorter fingers, and varying body fat percentages, right?
