recap: trying to find a heavier bullet for metal silhouettes that's as accurate as the Rem factory .38 +P 125gr SJC HP's.

Even factoring in my limited shooting skills and a low-budget rest, it doesn't appear to me that either of these two powders will work well with 158gr SWC's. :(

Back to the drawing board, I guess.

My experience is that both 231 and Unique can produce accurate loads in the .38 Spl.  So, I think your problem lies elsewhere.

I can't tell you what the problem is, but I seriously doubt that another powder will help.  231 is an excellent powder for the .38, and Unique is also good.

The nice thing about reloading is that there is always room for another experiment.

Thanks

While the 4.3 load is the most accurate, it's also the most anemic.

I'm trying to find an accurate load that will smack a heavy steel plate.

I'd suggest loading up a few batches each with a different level of crimp.  Make sure you don't have a crimp problem before you go chasing powders.

good advice

I went with a more aggressive crimp on the group I reloaded this evening.
