I am a firm believer that a man should have at least one of the following:
AR15
Edit to add: an AK47 variant (what was I thinking?)
a revolver in .357
a SA cowboy
Winchester model 94
Remington 700
a good 12 gauge
a modern auto handgun
and a good 1911

I am only a SA cowboy, and 1911 short of that goal.

So, I have decided to add a 1911 to my collection, in 45 ACP of course, and would appreciate specific model recommendations.

I want a quality firearm, yet not a $2,500 quality firearm.

Being a bit of a throw-back, would a Colt 70 series, or one of the stock Springfield Armory models be a good 'only 1911', or would you guys suggest something like the Kimber, or other makers?

I must admit, the Colt looks good, but again I am not qualified to rate them yet.

Thanks in advance.

Seems you like more "classic" firearms. I suggest a Springfield Armory WWII GI 45. Under $400.www.springfield-armory.com/images/pistols/PW9108LLarge.jpg

wow! MeatGrinder!

under $400?

Is there something about the fundamentals of the weapon that limit its potential?
I know I can trigger parts, sights etc. to enhance a 1911, but is this one good to go, and upgradeable on these levels?

if so, I love it

thanks!

Everyone seems to love 'em!  They have them for $389 at Fin Feather Fur in Ohio.

I just bought that exact pistol at the local funshow for $399.  I've only fired one or two boxes out of it so far and it ran perfectly and more than accurate enough for a service pistol.   I was easily able to delimb a small tree

The new colt 70 series are amazing!  I bought one with the intention of sending it out to Chuck Rogers for some custom work.  Turns out I love the thing as is.  It's an heiloom quality piece.  I also plan on picking up a Springer WWII this week.  A shop I'm going to has 'em for $395.  If you got the cash, get the Colt (you won't regret it), but if you don't get the Springer and feel good about it.  The springer is a quality piece.  Lots of smiths recommend it very highly as a good base gun if you don't want to use a Colt.  In fact the WWII is the only "regular production" model (not counting TRP's etc) where the slide and frame are hand fitted.

Plus.  Where the hell is the Garand on your "must have's" list?!

Go with a Colt Series 70 Gov't.  If you don't have the cash have a garage sale and buy a Colt Series 70 Gov't.  If you still don't have the cash after the garage sale sell a relative and buy the Colt Series 70 Gov't.

Actually,
I'm with desertmoon.  Shit, that's what credit cards are for, right?  Just eat some more mac and cheese and Ramen noodles and get the damn series 70.  You won't regret it.

If you are going to own 1 1911, I would go for the Colt series 70. Classic, and definitely an heirloom in the future.

I didn't even know Colt was selling these. How much?

Hmmm... interesting list of "must haves"!  I'm only lacking the Winchester M-94 --- can't think of one good reason that I'd need or want one.

If you've waited until now to pick just ONE 1911 pistol it may be a tough choice.  20 years ago it was SO easy --- you bought a Colt.  Now there are LOTS of good 1911s out there to choose from!  I'm leaning towards a Kimber Custom II in 10mm Auto for my next one.

Happy hunting!!
