Hey people, I have a friend who wants to purchase an SAA type handgun for his wife to shoot Cowboy Action with. I'd like to know from those with personal experience how various makes stand up. Please provide info on: Ruger Vaquero? 4 5/8 Stainless .45 NIB $430 delivered Uberti? 4 5/8" .45 blued NIB $380 delivered. 5.5" .45 blued NIB $396 delivered EMF? Either Dakota or Hartford? Colt Cowboy? Beretta? Obviously price ranges would be helpful also. Prices listed are prices he's obtained in his search. Please just elaborate on personal experiences good or bad. Thank you very much for any info, Scott |
I have been doing some research on this as I am looking to buy one for my father in law who is a western arms buff. So far I've found Colt is Original and most desirable, but also very expensive. The Ubertis, Rugers and Berreta's all seem to be very good quality. In the reviews I read the EMFs were somewhat lower on the scale. The reviews seemed to indicate to stay away from EAA SAA clones. Here are some more SAA clone manufacturers to look at: www.cimarron-firearms.com www.navyarms.com www.usfirearms.com |

Thanks for the info so far. I've been advising him that the Ruger might be the best bet as it's cheap and he's got the Ruger name behind the product. However, if they're truly not any good I don't want him to waste his money if a suitable option is available. Thanks again, Scott |

The Ruger is built like a tank and will handle pressures that the colt copies wont. It has a transfer bar firing pin system that makes it safe with 6 loaded while the Colt copies are not. I picked up a LNIB stainless 4 5/8 Vaquero in .45 colt for $325. I even believe someone on the EE has one for sale in Blue. If it's for the wife I'd consider going with one in .32 H&R mag, it'll be easyer for her to shoot. |

She's a State Trooper I believe so she's familiar with the handguns so it shouldn't be too bad. I tried to convince him to get the Vaquero in .357 so she could pick up cheap .38 Special Value Packs at Wal-Mart but it seems her friends all shoot .45s so she can share blanks and other ammo. Thanks for the info guys, keep it coming. Scott |
Check out Dixie Gun Works. If it's blackpowder, they sell it! FWIW, Ruger also has their Old Army models. I kinda wanted one to put a conversion cylinder in to shoot modern ammo in. Might be my next gun????????? |
