Here are some pics of a barrel on an M&P40. The grooves are gray/silver colored. Patches come out clean. It has about 2500 rounds down it. I tried getting a pic looking down the barrel but couldn't get it to focus on what I was looking at. When looking down the barrel the grooves (the gray areas) have lines (looks kinda rough) running the length of the grooves. They twist with them. It is only the grooves that are affected.

my bad. I am in a hurry and doing this from my phone. These "lines" that I see in the grooves and the discoloration in comparison to the lands, is it normal or is messed up or is lead, etc etc???? Patches are squeaky clean coming out.

Anybody have input on rough grooves of handgun barrel. What is causing them????

Sounds like copper fouling to me. Nothing really to worry about. What is your cleaning procedure?

Geez, I'm not enough smart enough to answer the question let alone read your mind!

I'd try searching for what the people use to clean the barrels to get any lead and copper out of them. They have something you can pretty much pour in there and it dissolves most of it. Usually the patches won't get all the hard to reach places. I prefer a bore snake... plus it's green so I can't tell if it's coming out clean or not

How many rounds through it?

my cleaning is what every solvent I have on hand. hoppes, clp, remoil. I use soak down patches and push through. Do that a couple times and then a dry patch and repeat until white dry patch comes out clean. I tried a bronze brush the other day and it didn't do much. I will stop and pick up some different solvent and try. Round count is about 2500 or so. Thanks

Yeah, since you haven't really been brushing it, I'm sure it's just copper fouling.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Here is an update with some better pics. A couple things look at the grooves of the rifling. You can see what I mean when I talk about lines in the grooves that run the length of the rifling. Is this normal? 2nd, the picture of the chamber end has what appears to be some nasty tooling marks. Hard to see in the pcis but they are the dark spots at the beginning of the rifling. In person you can see the roughness. Third, not noticeable in the pics but there are marks on the lands as well that run perpendicular. Just little lines every so often. Think it may be time for a new barrel??

Those are fantastic photos.

I don't see anything unusual there. Your barrel is spotless and has some tool marks.

Some do. Some don't.

Does it shoot accurately?

1. Yes >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Then don't worry about it.

2. No >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> It's still not a problem with the barrel.

Thanks maybe i should take up barrel photography. hahaha. I cleaned the hell out of the barrel with some good copper cleaner. Looks better than before. So those lines in the grooves are normal then? Sorry for the concern, I just never payed much attention to the barrel until recently.

Just an FYI I ran a toothpick over the "lines" in the grooves of the rifling and they fell like little ridges. Are these tool marks or intentionally there? Again, just want to make sure we are all good here. My rifles are very glossy and mirror like on the lands and grooves. Are pistol barrels different?

Cut rifling....poorly cut with dull cutter, then melonited for finish.

Cut rifling works but it is harder to do well than button dialing.  Smith does it poorly.

See if you can shoot it enough to smooth out the lines.

I am sure after 2500 rnds it would have been "smoothed" out as much as possible. I even used a .45 caliber brush (after figuring it won't do any damage to the barrel) and formed it to fit the bore to really get the grime out. That is a clean and smooth as she is getting.

It is just poorly done cut rifling where the cutter was obviously dull.

M and Ps look like that...

Smith has barrel issues with these pistols...rifling...unlocking...accuracy...twist rates...you name it.

The aftermarket barrels from Apex can't get here soon enough.
