last weekend i went and cleaned all of my pistols.

my glock 17 with about 300 rounds through it was caked with carbon to the point i had feeding issues. ive never had that problem with any of my other guns. my xd40 had about 700 rounds through it and ive never had it miss a beat and it doesnt look half as dirty as the glock.

anyone else have a problem with carbon build up on 9mm glocks?

no

and i shoot the nastiest stuff out there...a mix between reloads, WWB, russian (from tula to bb to wpa) for thousands and thousands of rounds

never a problem

now, dirty mags, thats something else...

what kinda issues were you having?

the underside of the slide was caked in black soot. the ramp on the barrel was also caked in soot to the point that the slide would fail to close all the way.

i was just surprised that there was so much carbon built up inside the gun.

Strange.

I didn't even know glocks had to be cleaned. I've got 2000+ rounds through one of mine with no cleaning.

Im guessing over lubing.

Never had a problem. I have shot well over 300 rounds in a single camping trip and could hardly notice any carbon on the front of the gun. I even carried it for a couple weeks when I got back home before I had a chance to clean it and it wasn't bad at all.

My 1911 has lots of carbon build up after about 50 rounds but it's a whole different beast. Of course I have put several hundred rounds down range with no re-lubing of any kind and it's never given me an issue either

I currently have over 700 rounds (on my way to 2000) through a G22 without cleaning, and it still runs just as well as it did when it was clean.  300 rounds should not be nearly enough to get it so dirty it stops feeding reliably...

Excessively dirty ammo?  Other than that, just dirty gun with a weak recoil spring (unk what round count is on your gun)..Duty/Carry guns should prob get a new one by 5k rounds..  Just bought new one for my Sig SP, which went over 10k with the original.

That doesn't sound like 300 rounds of build-up. I've done thousands through .40 and 9mm Glocks without cleaning and no malfunctions.

i bought the gun brand new and have put maybe 500-600 rounds through it.

i could see over lubing being a factor

did you clean it before you shot it?

My G19's maiden voyage was 500 rounds of Brown Bear.  Not a single hiccup, and BB is dirty ass Ruski steel case.

300 rounds through a G17 and it clamming up sounds way out of the norm.

I clean my G19 gen 4 after every range trip, but my brother hasn't cleaned his G30sf in almost 1000 rounds and his is still chugging right along with no issues ever. He has probable a few thousand through his, while I have exactly 1911 rounds with not a single hiccup of any kind. Pure Glock reliability.

News to me. I've had Glocks since the 90's. Rarely clean it.

Never really cleaned any of my glock till I sold them. Thats like 7 glocks and a few thousand rounds.

I ran a G17 or 14k rounds without cleaning, simply added lube and went to town.

No issues.  So long as the striker channel is clean you're going to be hard pressed to make a Glock fail.  The guns are LOOSE for a reason.

My G26 would go about 300 rounds of dirty reloads before it would start FTF. I find it's significantly less of an issue with the 17 and 19. But with the G26 it was regular and measurable.

Something's not right.  I have 12 Glocks and none of them have ever malfunctioned due to being dirty, and I've run a lot of rounds through them between cleanings.

One was an old, 80's vintage Gen 1 G17.  I started with a clean gun at a Gray Guns pistol class and didn't clean it over the 3 days.  That was just over 2000 rounds of old, dirty, actually corroded due to improper storage 3D FMJ ammo.  I didn't even lube during the 3 day class.  Then I decided to keep on going.  I finally stopped at 4000 rounds, about 500 of it was my own cast bullet reloads using wheelweights.  Still no malfunctions, but I figured I proved my point and cleaned it.  It was extremely dirty with carbon fouling caked on.  Remember, I never even lubed it during this time, either.  Still not a malfunction.

I've gone through other extended times of non-cleaning of Glocks if they were just range guns, but that was the only time I actually kept track of the rounds I fired.  In fact, I've never had a pistol that couldn't fire 300 rounds without malfunctions, even custom, tight fitting 1911's.  Something's really wrong with the ammo if it was that dirty.

It was mentioned by someone else about excessive lubing.  That's a definate possibility.  Not the same as this, but there was a dumbass cop in a city here in W. MA issued a G21.  He ignored his training and owners manual and felt it would be a good idea to give his striker channel a shot of WD-40 before every shift.  A few years ago, he drew on an armed perp, pressed the trigger and got nothing.  Not even a click.  Did a tap/rack and tried again, nothing.  Luckily, backup arrived right then and there and the POS dropped his weapon and surrendered.  Over or improper lubing of a Glock is a bad thing.

As said before how much lube are you using.
Did you lube in the firing pin channel?
Glocks do not need a lot of lube just in the areas detailed in the owners manual.
Look in the Glock information link tacked in the forum Glock Forum

This is one of the prime candidates. I've fired more than that in one trip and had no issues. I never lube my Glocks and only clean them because I get tired of the lint buildup from carry.

Out of curiousity, what ammo are you shooting with?  I've used some off brand Russian ammo that was pretty dirty but not so bad that it hindered the pistols performance.

I bought a Glock 34 3/16.

I have since put 550 rounds through it.  WWB, Federal, Remington, PMC, Hornady, Wolf, Speer, Blazer, PMC and Magtech.

I had 1 FTE, because my buddy was limp-wristing it. (PMC)

I popped the barrel out and gave it a real quick cleaning, and the wiped the slide down with a gun cloth.

But there was no where near enough buildup to warrant a full take down, or to cause what OP is describing.

How long have you had it?  If you have had it for a while, have you considered getting a new recoil spring?

what kinda ammo did you use?

i dont think i've ever overlubed a glock to where it would jam in on itself, even when left dirty and cold...if you had a bunch of failure to go into battery a lot, it sounds like you need to replace your recoil spring...unless its so "tight" that you know its binding up in the chamber (ie: very dirty)

Ditto.

Sounds like an ammo thing, with over lubing which just acts as a crud magnet.

I have a 13 year old G17 and I usually clean it after every 800-1000 rounds and I have not had any problems.

I keep all three of my Glocks clean...after each shoot.
I've used the G22 and G23 for 500 round days at Oregon Firearms Academy with no issues. Still, just a little dirtier than a 100 round day at the range...

I used bulk local ammo. Nothing special ( at 500 round days...the fuck! better not be special).

I follow the manual for lubing, most recommendations online and here are pretty consistent.

i was using remington and federal FMJ i picked up at walmart. i cleaned the gun out and put about 50 rounds through it today. i think i was limp wristing for a few rounds with .33 rd mags (had them loaded so i shot a few from them) changed over to my 17rd mag and no issues at all.

Any weapon will be dirty if you don't bother to clean it after you shoot it.
