I am interested in getting a .357 mag. I would like a small one that would be good for using as a CCW. What is a good one for somewhere in between 300 and 400 bucks? I was originally going to get a .38 special but my dad told me a .357 mag could shoot .38 special too. Is this true or is this like that old myth that the AR can shoot AK ammo?

Thank you for the info.

All .357 revolvers can shoot .38 Special rounds.  I shoot .38 Specials in my .357 Mag Ruger GP100 all the time.

Ruger revolvers are good. So are Smith and Wesson, but don't get onethat is too small or light, or you'll hurt yourself. Avoid Rossi and Taurus, even if it means buying a used American gun. The quality difference is pretty big.

Like stated all ready, all 357's will handle 38 ammo. >38 ammo is good for target practice, because of less recoil, and you can also find some real good .38 ammo for stopping power. I have found some 38 spl+p 125gr. that will realy do some damage to a person at close range thats going to cause you harm. The 357 ammo will have a tedency to go to far,and the 38 will not go as far but cause more damage. So what I am saying is go with a .357 you have more choices in ammo.I have a 357 S&W mod-19 with a 2"barrel,and its a beautiful gun to shoot. Its very accurate out of the box.I have shot other 357's and IMO I am still very happy with what I have, the S&W.Here in Dallas they have guns for rent at the local gun range, check where you live to see what they have, then you will be able to get a better Idea of what style you like.

As far as Taurus revolvers, I had a .357 magnum Tracker and it was nice, factory ported. Taurus revolvers have come a long way, they are a nice as anybody elses now. They also make the most models as well. There really isn't many options for a new revolver. Ruger, S&W, Taurus and Rossi, which I wouldn't recommend even though they have been bought by Taurus.

I'm a S&W fan.  I like the 637 in 38 Spl., $329 around here. But, if you want a 357, maybe a model 19/66 would be good. Or a 13/65.  But they cost a little more.

If you have to ask "how much?" you can't afford it.

smith>colt>taurus>ruger>rossi

Buy in that order.

Honestly, I like taurus and smith revolvers.

But for a defensive handgun, go straight to a 1911, unless yoiu want less recoil, then get a 9mm hi-power.

I don't like Taurus or Smith either one, with thier added safety locks, they just are not for me.

I do like the Ruger SP101,   Find an older Smith before the gun safety lock crap.

Every time I buy a Taurus it becomes gun show fodder quickly.

Ruger GP-100.

Rugged, durable, handy and the best cylinder release of the major players. And, the most reasonably priced.

I have an SP101, which is a good size, but it holds 5 rounds, if that bothers you. Perhaps a small S&W 6-shooter?

Get yourself a 585 or 686 Smith and you wont/cant go wrong.

That lock on Taurus revolvers doesn't cause any problems. When I had mine, I just never locked it, no big deal.

Why do you keep buying Taurus guns? That lock doesn't cause any problems, just leave it unlocked.

I shot my buddy's GP100, the grips are one of the most comfortable for factory grips.

S&W model 65 in 3" or 4" are great revolvers and used police guns can still be found dirt cheap.

I have had a Ruger GP100 .357 with a 4" barrel for over 10 years now and it has been a fantastic pistol.  I liked the factory grips, but replaced them with a Hogue grip and it makes a difference during long range sessions shooting full power magnum rounds.  I would recommend the GP100 to anyone looking for a reasonably priced, quality revolver.
