I just need somebody to square me away here. I want to purchase a Glock 17. I am not sure which options I should go with. I know I want a 3rd generation because of the problem reliability. I plan on going with the XS Big Dot sight eventually, I know that I need that tacticool feature, so I need one with the slots up front for mounting a light.
My questions are: 1. If I plan on going with the XS big dot, which sights should I get from the factory? If I get the standard fixed sights, are the old sights drilled out to install the big dot? 2. Are all 3rd generations available with the accessory rail? 3. Are there any other factory options I should take a look at before I order? Thanks in advance! Jeremy |

Jeremy I'm pretty sure Glock only offers the plastic sights from the factory now unless you buy an LE pistol. All 3rd gen Glock 17s will have a rail. No, there are no other options to consider from the factory. I would ask if you've ever used the XS sights before and why you chose those versus Trijicons, Mepros, etc. |

I would get a gen 3 17 or 19, get some trijicon night sights and shoot the piss out of it. XS sights are awesome but they are an unconvental sight system and if you get more guns you will have to put them on all weapons or double your practice time. This |

Jeremy stock, plastic glock sights are easily knocked out/pulled out and you can install aftermarkets w/ ease (if the front sight is screwed in); imo, if you can figure out how to run a 3 dot, you can run XSs....just my opinion 2: yes 3: no,stock glocks run fine; just need steel sights on them imo |

All Gen3 G19s have the accessory rail as well. |

I am left handed so the only thing I add to my glocks other than night sights is extended slide release. For lefty makes it easy to lock slide back with nuckle of trigger finger. Yep. To me the extended slide stop seems like the part that SHOULD have been there from the factory. |

| I never could get used to XS Systems Big Dot sights. My targets would look like I shot it with buckshot with all my shots all over the place. I went back to Trijicon 3 dot sights and I was good to go. I then put on Warren Tactical 2 dot night sights and I was go with those also. |

I'm just curious, what problems are you seeing that make you shy away from the gen 4? Considering the rsa problem was resolved... And they both use the same ejectors and what not. What makes you think you won't see the same problems on either generation when purchased new? Your best bet is if you can get a blue label or gssf deal with standard sights. This will give you 3 magazines in most cases and everything you need to get started at the lowest cost. Then just purchase the new sights and install them yourself or bring it to a gunsmith to do. Sights are sights and it's really just a matter of removing the old and putting the new ones in. On the 17, rails are standard on the Gen 3 and 4 so you don't have to worry about that at all. There really aren't any other factory options. Unless you're wanting a lighter connector for the trigger or something, but that won't be from the factory unless you go with a 34 or 17L. You can either pick up an aftermarket or factory glock from someone else and then either put that sucker in yourself or ask a gunsmith. |

Night sights, Talon Grips, and smooth face G17 trigger (if it came from the factory with the accursed serrated trigger like the G19 does). That's all I do to a factory Glock. Spend you money on some extra mags and lots of ammo. Practice will make you better than any tacticool sights or accessories can.
