I thought it was still the Beretta M9 9mm.  I also realize there are some 1911s still out there, but have seen various places that the M9 is going to be totally replaced by an HK 45acp?  Yes, I live under a rock...but they occasionally let me out to play.  True?  Or is the Beretta still "The Gun"?

Much like the M-16/M-4 platform, the M9 isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

The government just signed a new contract for over 500,000 new Beretta M9's.

What does that tell you?

Some units can use whatever they want, for the most part.

As far as general issue, it's the M9.

Common misconception. Even though some Units have a lot of latitude of what they issue, they still can't use "whatever they want." They T&E every weapon that they field, and issue weapons that meet their needs.

The M9 is being phased out in favor of the M9A1 which is basically an M9 with a rail.  There are a few MOS that get the M11 (Sig), and some Marines (MARSOC) get to use a 1911 but the vast majority of users will have the M9.

Just to throw some fuel on the fire, various US military units have at various points in history have used:
M1911A1s
Meusoc 1911s - possibly type classified as the M45 but I'm not so sure that's accurate
Sig M11 (p228)
Sig p226 (also passed the XM9 trials)
HK Mark 23
Sig 229 (Coast Guard)
Glock 22 (story is SF guys use them because they can get .40 HP from Coasties - as well as super-sweet tan 20-rd mags you can't buy)
I seem the recall a very small run of STI double stack 1911's popping up on the public market from CAG testing

But in the end, the official standard is the Beretta 92FS, and will continue into the future until Westinghouse makes a laser pistol.

Glock introduced a (black) 22rd mag for the Glock 22 last year

In 2009 the Army ordered 450,000 more M9's and the Marines ordered a large number of M9A1's.

USCG DIAT issued Glock 17's in the late 80's/early 90's

That tells me that the US government just wasted some more of the tax payer money on a pos 9mm.

You can add the SIG P239 9mm and HK45c to the list. Both are in use by NSW along with the P226.

CG also uses the 239 (DAK and in .40 in our case) for CGIS and IIRC, HITRON

I wish they would switch to Glock but that will never happen.  Either way I think the M9 is a great gun with good magazines.  I believe that is where the government went wrong and purchased cheap magazines.
