| Is there a thread on ideas or suggestions for locations to store a gun in your automobile for quick access but also out of visibility. I saw on another thread someone put a baseball hat over it and thought that was a pretty good idea. Is there a thread dedicated to these ideas? |

Just get one of THESE <––-<< And be done with it.
I like the toolbox idea. |

sometimes on long trips I take my ankle holster off and hang it off the floor 4wd selector. I have also stuck the regluar holster between the seats. I dont care if its visable, if I need it I dont want to fumble for it at all. When I leave, the gun comes with me.

I currently have my "car gun" in the glove box, but that is also one of the first places someone will look if they smash and grab so I'm looking to change that. I like the under the dash idea might have to see if I can mount something under there. Some cars have extra plastic that you can mount to. However most cars do not. It's mostly just wires and things and stuff... If you work at it you could rig up a set of cross members to mount to. |

Whatever you go with, study up on your state laws to make sure you are in compliance (assuming you don't have a CCWP). In FL, the handgun must not be readily accessible for immediate use / must be in a container with a closed lid, snapped holster etc. he lives in texas. with the passing of the castle doctrine not too long ago a persons vehicle is now considered an extension of their home. EVERYONE in the state of texas who is legally allowed to own a firearm, may carry that firearm anywhere in their car locked and loaded without a CHL permit. gotta love texas. though i must admit, i dont know how much i like that part of the castle doctrine as it makes it legal for a petty thief to carry a gun in his car so long as he hasnt been convicted of a felony yet. as for places to carry it, if you were leaving it in your car 24/7 i would have it holstered under the dash, front seat, or in the center console, but i would lock it in the glove box while you are in a store or something taking care of your business. easiest thing to do is just get your CHL so you very rarely have to leave it in your car anyways. if your not LEO, military, or anything that qualifies for a discount its about 150$ total and one saturday of your time for a license. oh, and dont buy an expensive gun. a cheap used revolver or semi is perfectly fine for a car gun. |

Also have a padlock-able bag made out of a wire mesh but it's kind of a hassle to use and I wouldn't want to be getting it open under stress. Good solution as a place to put your car gun while in the mall though. I like locks better than trying to hide stuff. If loser thief is looking to steal your stereo he'll see your gun. I would really like to keep an AR in the car but haven't come up with a good way to secure it. |

Titan Gun Vault- has a separate mag box so you can travel across state lines in compliance with the FOPA of '86.

Wrong. In Texas, "castle doctrine" has nothing to do with your vehicle and carrying a firearm........completely different and separate legislation. It is legal to carry a handgun in your car as long as it is not in plain view. Go here for an excellent guide to Texas firearms laws: http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=637 |
| Unfortunately, I can't give you the name of the company, but at the gun shows in the Dallas area there was a company that made several sizes of locking safes to fit in car center consoles. They could be bolted into place, so it would be difficult to get them out in a smash and grab. They had the pushbutton locks for opening. You may be able to find them searching on the internet. They seemed well made, and I believe they cost in the $140-$200 range. |

Best place to store it in your vehicle for quick access is on your belt. +1 I find that can be painful and difficult to get to (seatbelt). I have one of those contractor nylon zip-up binders. Will accommodate the SRH perfectly. Also olds a box of ammo, knife, etc. I have a GMC truck with the flip up armrest/storage area. That binder fits perfectly under it with enough tension that it won't slide around. Zipper facing towards dash allows very quick access to the butt of the handgun and draws with no snags at all. With some foam placed in it to take up space, it works well with the P226 also and keeps the butt right at the zipper. Very inconspicuous if I have to leave the handgun in the truck for some reason. Actually almost invisible because the interior of the truck is almost the same color and you really can't see the binder under the armrest unless you look for it. I'd guess my toolbox would get stolen before my "binder" if someone broke in. |
