when you get a dud round in a semi automatic pistol, do you think in a life and death situation it would be better to cock the hammer again to strike it another time or just get rid of the dud cartridge?

Just rack the gun and get rid of the bad round.

Unless of course it's your last round, then you might as well give it a try.

On the plus side, center fire duds seem to be pretty uncommon. I haven't fired 100K center fire rounds in my lifetime yet most likely, but I've certainly fired tens of thousands, and if I could remember them all, I could probably count the number of duds I've had with the fingers of one hand, and still have a few fingers left over.

I posted that topic a month or two ago with a poll, asking people how many duds they've experienced. Most experiences were similar to mine.

When you get a click instead of a bang, you perform an immediate action drill, a tap-rack-bang.

This.

Pick up some dummy rounds and practice IA drills. It's scary to see how many people stop and stare at their weapon after they hear the click.

i try to use manipulations that are consistant with as many different many types of firearms as possible. I shoot either an xd or a glock 19, neither have a second strike capability, and even if they did i would do a tap rack and get back in the fight. just like i do with all other semi auto handguns.

I have the orange Safety Rounds. When I shoot, I take them with me and I will lay out loaded rounds with the safety rounds mixed in. Then I will close my eyes and load up several mags to practice my malfunction or "Tap, Rack, Bang" drills.

It's something I try to do every or every other time I shoot.

I have never ever seen a dud go off after the 2nd strike.  Like everyone else said; get it outta there and try the next round.

i do the same, i load one dummy/ inert round per magazine, this is good mindset and good training. Good on you.

tap rack bang.  How do you know its a dud?  The mag might not have locked in and bakced out... tap rack bang will fix most malfuntions very quickly.

of the duds i've had not one has ever gone off on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or whatever strike.

immediate action drill is the answer.

i have also never experienced a hang-fire.
