| I have a 9mm BHP. Would you use the Mecgar 15-rd magazines, or only stick to the 13-rd factory magazines? Are they any drawbacks to using the 15-rd mags? |
|
I have 4 13 round Mecgars & 6 15 rounders. They all function 100% I would avoid the USA brand mags & the KRD S African 17 round mags. Some of the 17s work, some have a problem with the follower binding in the mag body. The only drawback Im aware of is you can go through ammo faster with a 15 round mag than with a 13 round mag. Edit/ If youre in the DFW area you can pick them up at Ajax Grips OTC sales in west Dallas & avoid shipping charges. Ajax is usually about $2 higher than other vendors but if you figure in shipping savings you end up saving a couple of bucks. |

Good BHP mag info: BHP Mags CDNN has Mec-Gar mags for $18.99. I think shipping is a flat $10. |

Mec-Gar magazines are some of the finest and reliable magazine availiable for the Browning Hi-Power. They manufacture 10,13,15 and 20rd for this model. I've never had a reason to own a 10rd, but did own some 15rd in the early 90's and had a malfunction with one. The MG 15rd magazine follower is a flat hollow base follower i.e no legs and hollow based for the spring to set inside. During a match back then I bumped my pistol pretty hard (maybe fell since I can't remember) or jolted the pistol at the base and the 15rd flat follower stood straight up and down inside the magazine with rounds still inside the magazine. A malfunction to say the least. Sold them all after that. I'ver never heard of anyone else having the same problem, only praise for the MG 15rd which is great since they are fantastic magazines. If you inspect a typical 10,13, or 20rd Mec-Gar mag follower you will notice the follower has a 2 or 4 legged style follower to aviod tipping. You'll maybe never have a problem with the 15rd mag, but that one time in a semi-real world scenario lessoned me. I'm not saying do not buy them, just be aware of a potential malfunction under the right circumstances. |
| as with any mag, even factory ones, shoot it extensively before you trust your life to it. and use the same ammo you carry. I have 10, 13, 15 rd mec-gar and factory, KRD 17's, and south african 15 rounders, and inglis 13 rounders. I have had 1 issue with an older factory mag (60/70's cant be sure). I also have had 1 issue with the SA 15 rounders - needed to slightly file / smooth the feed lips on 2 of them. after that they work fine (but I wont carry them, just range mags now). after about 100 rounds through it, I'll consider a mag tested. |
Thanks, that's practically walking distance from my office, so I will definitely check it out this week. |
| I've been very happy with Mecgar 13 rounders. I have not bought any 15 rounders simply because I know the 13 round mags are the original design. Mecgar uses some kind of special spring to allow the same mag body to hold 2 more rounds. Most reports of the 15 round mags are positive but I just figured I don't need the 2 extra rounds that badly. I would rather have 100% functionality which is what the 13 round mags give me. |
Did you ever frequent any other Hi Power boards? Seems like I recall someone mentioning a problem with 15 rounders and I wonder if it was you.... Thanks for the info. I think I will stick with 13 rds for serious use, and the others for range use. |
| Yes criley, that was me with my one time experience with the Mec-Gar 15rd magazine over on the hipowers board. Not saying it could happen again to anyone, but once was enough for me. I've only experienced positive 100% reliability experiences with Mec-Gar 13 & 20rd magazines. The 15rd was the one time exception. Just remember reliability is the name of the game with the Browning Hi-Power using the correct components! |
