I picked up a 1985 Belgian Hi Power in real nice shape last year, and tucked it away I'm the safe.

Fast forward to 6 months ago, when I picked up a M&P9 for CCW. Every time I pulled that M&P out, I'd hear a weeping sound coming from the back of he safe. Forgotten all about the Hi Power.

So - I dumped that plastic turd this weekend and ordered some VZ grips for the Hi Power, removed the magazine disconnect, and ordered a C&S safety.

Come to find out, she fits nicely in my VM2 for a 4" 1911!!

Now. Few of my Hi Power questions.

What is the magazine situation like? I have one, obviously need more. Aftermarket? FN? What's the scoop?

Any thoughts on threaded barrels? Who makes them and where can I find one?

Are barrels drop in? I.e. Can I find a mil-surp one somewhere and have an extension put on?

1) The FN mouse trap magazines are nice, but with the magazine safety removed regular magazines drop free just fine.

The only after market magazines I'll use are Mec-Gar magazines. I've never had a problem with them.

I've also had no problems with 15 round Mec-Gars, although some people prefer to stay with 13 round magazines.

2) A replacement barrel will need to be properly fitted.

Mec-Gars work great. I have two 15rd and two 22rd mags, never a problem. I also have two 13rd FM mags that have been flawless, along with quite a few mouse traps. For aftermarket, MecGar only.

I've had no problem getting a hold of Mec-Gar magazines and a couple of the local stores have them as regular stocking items.

Again, Mec-Gars.  Can't go wrong.  As for barrels, OEM barrels will rarely need much in the way of fitting.  The down side to that is that they are very pricey.  Is your barrel shot out, or are you simply looking for a longer, threaded barrel for a can?  If so, what can will you run on it?  Cans and Hi-Powers sometimes don't work well, depending on the can.

Edit:  I carried my Hi-Power in an Alessi for a long time that was meant for a 1911.  I've had a lot of nice leather but it's hard to beat a Hi-Power holster from Garrity's Gunleather.  I have a Changeling that I used back when I carried a Hi-Power on a regular basis.

I have a wide combat trigger on one of my Hi-Powers. I really like it compared to the stock trigger.

I think it's a Cylinder & Slide. It was in when I purchased the pistol, so I'm not sure.

I likewise have a C&S combat trigger on my MKIII and think it's a nice option. Brownells now carries the Garthwaite trigger that looks good too.

I much prefer the Garthwaite wide trigger over the Cylinder & Slide.

ETA: Sorry for the potato lens on the camera.

Another 1985 Hi Power!  Less is more......dropped the mag disconnect, and got some grips from Craig Spegel.   Shoots tight as a tick.

I have 3 13 round mecgars and they all work fine.  I've never tried them with the mag safety in to see if they'd drop.  But who cares, it's not in and they drop and they all work.  I love the HiPower.  Man I gotta get mine fixed.

I need to find some of the VZs just to try, but I can confirm...a BHP with a set of Craig Spegel grips is like holding a bar of soap that's been formed to your hand over the course of months, for lack of a better comparison. It's just perfect. Not too thick, not too thin, fills all the voids, doesn't create any swells...fits perfectly.

Google Craig Spegel and give him a call!  He's on the Oregon Coast.
I even asked him to notch the left grip for the lanyard ring stud.

Mecgar is generally OEM for Browning/FN.

Greg Cote has Mecgar 13-round for $21.95 and 15-round for $23.95.  Shipping $6.95 per order, any quantity, and if in stock you'll know it before you order.  At this instant, in stock.  He ships wicked fast and is very reliable.

If he's out of stock when you get there, email him and he'll let you know when returned to stock.  There might be somebody cheaper, but none more reliable.

Spegel grips have to be felt to really understand why people rave over them. They fit my hands better than they look. As said by so many, MecGar magazines. I stick with the 13rd as a rule, not real fond of the legless followers on the higher cap mags, even if they seem to work well for folks.

Btw Mw. U just cost me $70 bucks for that safety It looks a lot easier to return to "safe" position from fire. So
yeah, thats a great upgrade from stock. Even with the factory grips wearing gloves its not always easy under stress to
switch the safety back to "on"

I like it a lot, it's a nice positive "Click" to either position. And it doesn't stick out too far to be a nuisance.

Mine took very little fitting to install.

Thats a great deal for FN mags, I haven't used them before and always had good luck with MecGars. Just for grins since I've already ordered and its shipped from Cote's. I wanted to see how bad midway would bone me like usual for shipping. Well for 5 mags it was only 9 something. I'm surprised, maybe they've stopped padding the shipping.
Thanks for the h/u, hope it helps somebody else.

Not sure why, they're factory FN mags...I can only assume whomever is giving them awful reviews have never had a factory FN mag before. They're stiff as hell, as normal factory FN mags are. The 5 I ordered fit and function just fine, and all accept the standard 13 rounds, provided you use your thumb and not a twig to load them...
