has anybody ever heard of converting a hi-power over to DA/SA?

FN made a DA/SA Hi Power for while, but I have not seen a conversion.

FN made a gun called Hi Power that was DA (along with other options) but it is nothing like a P-35 Hi Power...

The closest you will get a true Hi Power to da/sa is the SFS system that lets you carry hammer down. Thumb the safety to "off" and the hammer pops up and you shoot SA.

As posted above....FN made a few versions of a pistol that they called the HP, HP-DA, etc.....none of the sold very well and were discontinued. There are several on GunBroker right now. Do not confuse these with the real Hi Power...about the only thing in common is the name. Mags do not interchange either.

SFS is still "condition 1" carry - it just has the hammer down.  The major benefits on a GP-35 are:

1) the safety engagement and disengagemnt is much more positive
2) the hammer is very snag resistant when cocked and locked
3) it adds a hammer block and makes it virtually impossible to jar the hammer off the sear, or at leat cause an AD because of it,
4) it adds an ambi safety and makes it very easy to apply the safety/confirm the safety is on under even heavy clothing, and
5) it looks less dangerous/aggeressive to the general public - and to the moronic class 3 dealer mentioned in another thread who objects to "condition 1" carry.

Otherwise, other than pressing the hammer forward to "safe" the weapon rather than moving the safety lever up, it is operated exactly the same as any other Hi Power.

The SFS Hi Power is an outgrowth of the FN "fast action" system developed for military trials in the late 1970s.

FN also made an SA/DA version of the Hi Power as the Browing BDA (browing double action) based on an early 80's design for US Army trials (where the M9 was adopted). It is basically a Hi Power but with a trigger actuated firing pin safety and a safety that (unfortunately) also decocks the hammer, requiring the first shot off safe to either be manually cocked or accomplished with a double action trigger pull.  The weapons also have an extende dand squared off trigger guard.

FN also had the BDAO (browing double action only) version of this psitol with a mechanism that decocked the pistol after each shot.  So you got a consistent trigger pull with each shot, but it was a heavier DA pull.  I think the idea was to appeal to customers and police departments used to shooting revolvers.

FN also made the BDM (browning dual mode) which can be switched between SA/DA mode or DAO (revolver) mode via  switch on the left side of the frame.  It looks vaugely like a Hi Power but is an entirely different pistol.  This then led to two models without the switch - the BRM (browning revolver mode) that operated full time in revolver mode and the BPM-D (browing pistol mode - decocker) that was a DA only decocking pistol - but unlike the BDAO it also partially cocked the hammer spring after the first shot so the subsequent trigger pulls were a bit shorter.

In that regard, the BDA is closest to what the OP envisioned, but I am not aware of any capability to convert a hi power to that configuration. the BDA is based on the Hi Power but there are enough differences that a conversion is probably not an option -  it would be a lot cheaper just to get a BDA.

The only conversion available for the Hi Power is to the SFS Hi Power configuration.  That is a drop in conversion and takes about 20 minutes to accomplish and costs about $190.
