| Looking to purchase a Hi Power for the first time. i hear about the hump in the feed ramp and the older ones having problems with HP. If i run across the cheaper FM does it have the feed ramp thats gtg? What should I be looking for? Id rather find and FN or Browing at the local show trhis weekend. |

Most ( 95%) of the early BHPs that have the hump feed ramp will feed hollow points. The early FM BHPs are mill spec and produced under license from FN. FN sometimes purchased spares/parts from FM when FM were making pistols under license. I've used FM military contract pistol in various location in the Middle East and in El Salvador. These pistols have serial numbers starting with 289XXXX, and I would bet my life on them. These pistols are as good as FNs. If you look in the picture part of this section you can see a picture of my mil-spec FM Hi Power. The FM90 series are not military specs and are not made under license. They are produced by a civilian company and are not made using the techical data package, ie heat treating specs etc. They have the slides that look like a 1911. I would not buy one of them. Some people have good luck with them . I have no experience with the FM90 series, howeverI don't think the quality is as good as it should be. I know one person/smith who machined a FM90 series slide for Novak sights and was suprised at how soft the steel was compared to mil-spec FMs and FNs. He said he would not work on the FM90 series and did not even charge the customer. The early series FM90 Detective models seem to be better made. If I was you I would check out Gunsamerica. There is a company in TN that sell used FN MKIII HPs for $389.00. If you pick up one of the MKIIIs you don't have to worry about the feed ramps, will have good sight and an ambi safety. Plus I think the Israeli FN Hi Powers will be a collecters items in about 20 years or so. They give you an inspection period, and they will let you do a layaway.
