OK, so technically this is an FN question, but still. I have an FN Hi-Power SFS (Safe Fast Shooting). Basically, this allows you to load and chamber a round, then push the hammer forward. The safety goes on automatically. When you push the safety down, the hammer springs back and it is ready to fire. Cylinder and Slide makes a conversion like this to go from Single Action to SFS, but my particular gun is factory. That being said, is it possible to convert back? My reason is that there are more parts available for the SA version than the SFS.....
Any thoughts appreciated.... |

Which parts? I'm assuming the Hammer and Thumb Safety, but being that a Hi-Power is a pretty complex handgun, I'm willing to bet there are more to be removed.... Strip a HP down about 4 times and you'll see it's really not that complicated. I swapped safeties on 2 of mine today in about 5 minutes total. |

According to Ralph at Cylinder & Slide you can use the original slide stop, but you will need the following non SFS parts: Hammer Sear Hammer strut, complete Hammer strut pin Sear spring Thumb safety You can get the above for less than $100 if you shop around. I've successfully swapped out the sear, hammer, safety, etc. and I'm not a gunsmith. It may be as easy as just a reassembley or you might need to have the sear/hammer fitted to be safe. You may be able to sell the SFS parts as a group. They used to go for $100+ on ebay. |

It's unlikely you can find the parts for $100 even if you shop around - at least genuine FN parts. An FN/Browning hi power hammer alone retails for more than that and even at wholesale you won't find all those parts for the figure quoted.

My question is why would you want to convert it to a normal single action hammer configuration? The SFS system works so much better, especially for concealed carry. |

I find Hi Power parts all the time at waaaaay less than Brownings retail price. Brownings current retail price list:http://media.browning.com/pdf/parts/2008_browning_parts_pricelist.pdf Hammer $87.50 Sear $21.25 Hammer strut, complete $13.75 Hammer strut pin $2.50 Sear spring $7.50 Thumb safety $20 (add $10 if you want ambi) Yeah, that adds up to more than $100, but if you shop GunBroker or other auction sites you can find genuine FN parts for a lot less than from Browning. I picked up three dozen new C&S "No Bite" hammers for $18 each four years ago. And yes......I agree the SFS is a pretty neat thing. I see no need to convert any of mine. |
| The only "problem" I have had with the SFS system is the occasional offical or safety officer at a tactical pistol shoot who may ask me if I really want to start with my weapon in condition 2. I tell them absolutely and to watch closely - which always leads to a more in depth demonstration of how it works later. |

The only issue I have with the SFS is that the safety bites the inside of my thumb. I would love to get an extended safety (not as fat towards the rear of the safety), but the system requires use of that single design..... |
