I picked up a PF9 in trade. I dry fired this ONCE before learning that it can damage the extractor screw I took it to the range and experienced some failures to feed with certain brands of ammo. I did some of the fluff and buff as described on goldenloki's site, was careful to polish and not remove metal. I was also careful to orientate the firing pin correctly to allow the extractor screw to keep it in place. Though I don't have a pic of the screw, the end of it was indeed mangled a bit. I'm thinking it must have been dry fired before I owned it too. So I go back to the range, put 35 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 124-grain through it without any failures. Then I tried some Power Ball, and got some light primer strikes. Then I switched to Winchester white box, and after a few rounds, the firing pin and firing pin spring came flying out. The extractor screw is still in tight. I can grab a pic of the screw later, but does it seem plausible that a damaged screw could have caused this?

I don't know anything about these pistols, but my buddy has one and it is hands-down the most unreliable POS I've ever fired in my life. The little I've fired it, and what he's told me, it seems to be failures to extract although it doesn't feed to reliably either. I was going to disassemble it and see if there was crud under the extractor possibly keeping it from sufficiently engaging the cartridge rim.
I've never heard that it was bad to dry fire these pistols and I bet this one has been dry fired. I'll be following this thread closely!! |

B/S - my PF9 has been a beast. Fluffed & buffed before I ever shot it - now after 500+ rounds no failures to report. Kel-tec will fix it free - send it back. I ordered replacement parts from their website. If its just the extractor screw that caused this, then its no biggie to replace it (and the firing pin spring). We'll see how she shoots when I'm at the range again on Saturday. |
| I replaced the firing pin, firing pin spring, and the extractor screw today. It had to have been the screw. The original screw appeared to be fully seated but was actually loosened a bit. The replacement screw went in and felt much more solid and snug. Perhaps it was the dry thread-lock compound applied to the screw, I don't know. Hopefully I'll get a chance to shoot on Saturday. |

After rebluing the slide, I had a rash of FTE issues. I thought it was my hand loaded 9mm I brought to the range, so I was very disappointed. However, after stripping the pistol to remove the case, I realized it was the extractor/extractor spring/firing pin screw loose. I tightened it, and it ran flawlessly.
When I got home I reamed the hole, chased the threads on the screw, and applied some fresh locktite blue. Now it runs great, no matter what ammo I use. |
| I've put several hundred rounds thru my PF9 using three different mags and everything runs great. I had 2 jams in the first hundred and perfect since. I did do the buff and fluff on mine when I bought it and I do a thorough cleaning after each use but thats it. I guess some are problematic but mine is a keeper for sure. |
