I have talked to a few folks who own a CZ83 in .380, and all of them love it.  I'm thinking about getting one, but want to solicit as many opinions as I can prior to taking the plunge.  And yes, I'm well aware of the fact many smaller, lighter .380's are available, and I also know I could get a 9mm pistol in roughly the same size!

Thanks for any input!

They are great guns, and some military/police surplus ones are being sold off right now for around $200. I have fired a CZ-83 stainless .380 a few times and it was a very smooth shooting pistol. Personally I would go for a CZ-82, 9x18 is a little better round, and it is generally cheaper. Only problem with 9x18 is not all shops carry it so you may have to order ammo online.

Magazines for the CZ82 and 83 are supposed to be the same (9x18/9x17).  I've had one that I bought NIB in Germany in 1990.  My youngest son now owns it (he's a lefty) and enjoys it.  Large trigger guard for a glove in winter.  Never had a malfunction with mine.

I have one and love it. It's typically my daily carry gun as well.

I bought mine used. The trigger is fantastic, reliability excellent, and I love the way the 82/83s are set up. They're built like a tank, and point extremely naturally for me.

The worst part about them to me is the ammo costs. I need to start reloading .380 if I want to shoot it much.

I bought one for my girl and she loves it.  They are very solid guns, all steel which is heavy but rugged.  If you ignore the size/concealability factor and the limited availability of aftermarket things, I would rather have a cz-83 than any of the other .380's i have fired (ppk, p232, p3at).  The triggers on these are really nice, even the old surplus ones.

I have a CZ82, and love it as most do.  I prefer the 9 makarov round over the .380, but I doubt that anyone or anything that gets hit with either would care.  It's just a preference based on ballistic information, and the CZ82 was cheaper since it was purchased as a "surplus" handgun.  The finish isn't as nice as a newer CZ83, but I didn't buy it for it's looks.  I find it to be very, very reliable.  I've had no failures of any kind, and ammo is pretty easy to get online.  The only down side with my CZ82 is that the indoor range that I go to won't let me shoot it.  The owner said that the bi metal jacket bounces off his back stop in different directions than they are suppose to.  I'm not sure about that, but it's his business.

You can't go wrong with the CZ83, but my opinion is soley based on my experience with the CZ82.  I'm sure you'll be happy with the CZ83.

Good Luck,
DBAR

Coles Dist. has used surplus CZ-83s in stock. I bought one a couple weeks ago, and it is a great little gun.
