I am waiting on my CZ 75 SP-01 to come in and have been reading up on ammo for this gun.

I can't remember where I read it, but I found something saying that the SP-01 was designed for "NATO" ammo, which runs a little hotter than regular 9mm, and thus the recoil spring is a little stiffer.

Can anybody confirm this?

If this is indeed true, would it be wise to run hot ammo in it to make it run as designed? Or will it still cycle regular loads?

I have also read about people swapping the recoil springs for softer ones to accommodate weaker loads. Any pros / cons to doing this?

I run Walmart target winchester 115 grain ball through mine all the time. I never had a problem, its a CZ and it never fails to shoot.

Runs my light loads just fine, I wouldnt worry about it.

The only ammo I've had any issues with in CZs has been Blazer aluminum cased ammo.

It typically doesn't want to extract.

I picked up 2 boxes of Winchester Ranger ammo this weekend to start up my 9mm stash. They are "9mm Luger +P", 124 grain FMJ rounds. I tried looking them up, and nothing comes up. All I am getting for that bullet weight and style are "9mm Luger NATO", so it looks like maybe I have an older version, or they just renamed them.

Either way, they should run well through the SP-01 if the gun is indeed built for 9mm NATO ammo.

mine has fed and functioned fine with everything i've put through it. wolf, blazer aluminum, blazer brass, WWB, etc. never had 1 malfunction with it and its still on its factory springs.

What about those 147g Hornady JHPs?  Think it'll shoot those okay?
Just picked up  my SP01 last week and ran 100 rounds of 115g American Eagle FMJ through it without a problem.
I couldn't beleive how nice it shoots.  The other full size 9mm pistols I've shot don't even compare.

The twist rate in CZ pistols is optimized for 124gr bullets.  ALso, with 147 gr bullets' you may encounter some interference with the inside of the slide stop depending on the profile. Both Matt Mink and Angus shoot 124 gr bullets...actually Angus may be running some 121gr. WIth some 125gr Precision Delta HP loaded, my SP-01 has laser like accuracy. I've shot 147s in the past, but if you don't push them fast enough, they may tumble.

Thanks!  Good to know.

The only time my SP-01 has had any kind of failure is when I didn't engage the mag properly. I've run all sorts of factory and handloads through it as well.

RA9124N is the Winchester designation for the Ranger LE ammunition.  Used mostly for LE subgun applications.

The code on my boxes are "Q4362", which I tried looking up, but found nothing.

Here is a guide to changing recoil springs to match your load.  There's no cons to doing this.  I don't shoot NATO pressure or +p rounds in my SP-01, so I stepped down the recoil spring strength by 2 pounds.  But even the 18lb factory recoil spring ran the standard loads reliably.

+1

usually comes straight back or stovepipes

never had any issues with brass cased. have used 115, 124, and 147 grain without problems.

Very good article, thanks for posting.

I will be using the gun as a "night-stand gun", so +P rounds are not out of the question. However, I will be using normal, non +P rounds for "plinking". I think I will try it with the factory spring (18 pound) and see how that goes. I will be feeding it the Ranger, FMJ, +P rounds more-than-likely as "break in" ammo so to speak.

Thanks allot for the info!
