I have a Kahr P40 that I absolutely love, but for some reason it started acting up on the first couple of shots.  When shooting the slide will sometimes lock back with 4 or so rounds left in the mag.  It does this with all 3 mags I have.  I first thought that my thumb was bumping the slide release lever but I tried wrapping my left thumb over my right and basically made sure that it wasn't me and it is still locking back.  Has anybody else had this problem?  Anybody know what I can do short of sending it back?  I really hate doing that and any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Does it actually lock back?

I have a P40 that would jam after a couple of rounds.

The slide would come forward a little bit, just enough for the next round to hit the feed ramp, and lock the slide open. It looked like the slide was locked back.

Take out your slide stop, and check it out. Kahr told me its supposed to be a bearing fit (the pin can spin where in joins the lever)

Mine was very loose and you could actually wiggle the pin back and forth. It was rubbing the side of the slide. My slide shows some wear on side because of it.

Kahr set me a new one after I explained what was going on. The new one does NOT spin at all, they said it would break in. I've since put another 350 rounds thru it, and it still has not started to spin.
BUT that did fix the problem.

I hope that helps, because if not, I just did a lot of typing for nothing.

I had the same problem.  I was bumping it with my thumb when it recoiled.  Years of shooting 1911s high-thumb.

Dredd, no it's actually locking back just as though it had an empty mag.  I can thumb down the slide lever and it goes into battery and I can fire away as normal.  The slide lever is definitely up as though it had pressure on it from a mag follower.  The slide stop turns normally where the lever and pin join, but isn't loose or sloppy.  It definitely isn't a jam.

Lumpy, I thought I was bumping it with my thumb as well, especially since it's so small, but I tried shooting it with both of my thumbs sticking straight out and holding it with just my other fingers.  Same result.  I even had someone watch the slide as I fired and they confirmed that my thumbs weren't near the slide stop.  It seems to only happen on either the first, second or third shot in various combinations, but mostly after the first or second shot.  I can just thumb down the slide lever and continue shooting, but this is supposed to be my primary carry peice and I need it to be a tad more reliable than this.  It's frustrating because it hasn't had a single jam or failure of any kind other than the slide locking back.

I'll probably call them tomorrow and I'm sure they'll tell me to send it in, but I just wanted to see if the experts here had any advise.

Thanks for the responses guys!

I do not have this problem with mine. I did find this thread interesting due to Dredd308's comment on the slide stop pin. After about 400 rounds mine started to spin, and I was getting ready to call Kahr in it. Thanks for the heads up.

yeah, I didn't realize that it was a bearing either.  Learn something new all the time!  I spoke with Kahr support and they said that sounds fugged up and to send it in.  I sent it in today so I'm carrying the Kel Tec P11 now.  It's amazing how comfortable the P40 is and you don't really realize it until it's gone. I've only got a couple hundred rounds thru my p40, but without incident so far.

forgot to update this.  When I got my p40 back from Kahr it's been 100% ever since.  I've put about 500 through it since then and it has been perfect.

Kahr is great in my book and an example of how a company should behave if things go bad.

Since that time I've got another Kahr, a K40 ported bbl that I'm going to send in to Brasspile to get some sweetness added to it.
