First off, let me say that I would love to get a P-45 for carry. I have never shot one but I love the size and ergonomics. I must say; however, that in the Kahr forum, there are routinely multiple threads about Kahr problems. My XD45 has NEVER had a single problem of ANY kind, and while it is on the large side for me to carry, I know I can bet my life on it. Please educate me on the common "problems" with Kahr pistols and let me know if you use it for daily carry and are comfortable that it will function reliably when you absolutely have to have it do so. Thanks. Blake |

Seems that most posted problems of the Kahr's on the gun forums concern the polymer framed versions. The steel guns usually get rave reviews, and you seldom hear of a problem with the steel models. Kahr seems to have a good reputation of taking care of problem guns, even to the point of giving the buyer a NEW gun. As with ALL brands of guns, and with ALL products, all you can do is buy one and see want your experience is. Some people seem to make trouble for themselves by not giving the gun the factory mandated 200 round break in period, some complain the gun won't shoot cheap ammo, or they refuse to consider trying a different brand/type of ammo. Others with problems never give Kahr a good chance to deal with the problem. I've read several posts of buyers who have a problem, send the gun back to Kahr, then upon getting it back just sell it UNFIRED. They then take every opportunity to bad mouth Kahr for making crappy guns. I've seen and heard of a few "problem Kahr's" that were traded in or sold, and the subsequent buyers go on and on about how reliable it is. Bottom line: As with all products today, ya pays yer money, and ya takes yer chances". |
well said. sh-t happens. I can say this though, I own a kahr pm9 that since taking it out of the box and just lubing it, I have fired as of today 8500 perfect rounds, yes that is 8500 not one hic-cup, not one slide lock failed to open issue or nothing. Knock the polymers grips all you want, this the best handgun i have ever owned and I sold guns for a living for 40 years. My ons G19 is no more reliable than this and my pm9 is certainly a front pocket 24/ 7 carry for me. I just could never really understand why people say the polymer grips handguns are more issue involved, maybe they are, but my glock isn't, my kahr ishn't Won't knock the all steel versions of kahrs for we know they are a proven top quality product, but there are lots of all steel version other good guns out there to compete with kahr on that line but IMO, no one can compete with the kahr polmer line of handguns. They are top quality and mine at 8500 rounds shows zero signs of any type of wear. replaced the outer recoil springs 3 times in this 8500 rounds. Damn thing just goes bang every time, and oh it is deadly accurate to and oh yes a super double action trigger system. It has a date with clyinder and slide in february for some real custom work to be done to it. If I did not think this was a super super handgun, I would not be investing additional money with C & S on this karh. It is my "fightin" gun and i trust it with my life. There is a poster on another karh forum that has over 12,000 perfect rounds through his pm9 . they are what they are, one hell of a great handgun IMO... |

Regardless of what forum you read, you will see that any and all manufacturers have some problems. I think sometimes the problems are due to inexperienced users. It seems that there are more folks with experience on this board. You can be sure that some of the folks that post on this forum post on other forums also. Sometimes if a guy has a problem he posts that problem on multiple forums and that makes it look like are more people with problems than there really are. Kahr makes a good product. They have good customer service and will send you replacement parts if you don't want to send your whole gun back to them if there is a problem. Examples: My PM-9 after 200 round break in would not go back into battery sometimes. I called Kahr and explained what the gun was doing and they sent me a new recoil spring guide-rod assembly by UPS and I had it in three days. No problems of any kind since. The slide on my Kimber Ultra Aegis would not lock open on the last round on three of my four mags after 200 round break in. One phone call to Kimber and they sent out replacement slide stop the same day. No problems of any kind since. My wifes full size Springfield 1911 started having an ejection problem after it had about 1500 rounds through it. One call to Springfield customer service and they sent out a new extractor same day. Problem solved. My wife also has a Keltec PF 9. It had to go back to Keltec for a barrel upgrade. They shipped it back within a week after they got it. Great service. It works now but she prefers one of her 1911's or her P3-AT. So far all of the manufacturers that we have dealt with have given excellent customer service. Don't be discouraged if you buy a pistol and have some function problem. Don't start grinding and polishing. Call their customer service and let them fix your problem by sending you replacement parts or send it back to them for service. |

That PM40 is just one super handgun. I don't think there is anythingout there smaller, liter, more accurate and of such high quality. Had I been able to buy 40 cal ammo as low priced as I can get 9mm, I might have bought it instead of my PM 9 which as of today has over 8600 flawless rounds through it and it looks perfect everywhere. IMO this is one of the finest handguns that I have ever carried and I sold guns for a living for over 40 years. I just love shooting my pm9, a super accurate barrel, and very very nice DA trigger. Just no junk in this handgun, worth every dollar I spent on it. It goes with me now 24/7 in my front pocket. |

I own and carry a K9 every day in a Milt Sparks VM2. Thousands of reloads, factory Gold Dots, and about 1k of WWB. I polished the feed ramp the night I got the gun, then switched to a 22lb recoil spring after about 2-300 rounds. No problems to speak of after brake in. The only gripe I have the slide takes longer to detail strip than a Glock. Soon my wife will be buying a black K9. Need I say more? |
| i have over 8600 rounds through my jpm9 and I have never taken the slide completly down. I can but I have not, I see no real need to do it, with todays modern spray solvets, there is just no need to do so. I can high pressure spray the firing pin area very easy from both ends, and also the extractor area also. If it ain[t broke don't fix it,FWIW |
| the xd is a great choice i carry an xd .40 i also have a kahr k-40 and i have had zero issues to date and i am very very pleased with it. i have heard of problems mostly with the polymer framed versions and of all the kahrs i have experience with i have had 0 issues, but prefer the seel framed ones. |
is not the xd a polymer frame???? that is one nice thing about the kahr line, they make the same handgun in polymer and steel, Either one will float ur boat. Myself I go for the polymer anyday. Just can't say enough about the pm9 . What a super handgun. I after abouot 500 rounds sent my pm9 into MAG-NA-PORT for a nice porting job. Just took any and all little recoil bite out of this little gun. what a real pleassure to shoot. Never had one limpwristing issue with this pm9 either. Shoots right where u aim to. It has a date with Cylinder and Side the first of february for some real C & S custom work on this kahr. To me just alittle more iceing on the cake. |
This should be written in stone some place! A friend and I bought PM9's the same day. He reported failures to fire with three brands of ammo. I cleaned mine and hand cycled it 300 to 400 times. I shot 100 rounds on its first range trip without significant incident. One of the factory magazines in the box failed to lock the slide back a few times but the other one and four more I bought worked like a champ. I was torn between the P9 & PM 9; I'm happy with the PM9 so far. Good shopping & good shooting! |

My pm9 has 8800 flawless perfect rounds through it. not one malfunction of any kind since I got it. Got an email from kahr today, they will be coming out with a 380 sometime after first of year, that will be much smaller than the pm9. They didn't say to much about price, weight, or size other than it will be small. If it is the quality of their kahrs now, it will put a big hurt on kel tec low priced, extremely poor quality with lots of issues 380's. been there done that with kel tec, NO more for this shooter... edit to the above, now at 8900 flawless rounds..damn fine gun.. oops as of dec. 31 9300 flawless rounds. OOPS AS OF jAN. 6. 9500 FLAWLESS PERFECT NOT ONE HIC-CUP ROUND. |
+1 Have had mine for about a year now and carry it every day. I change out my other carry gun but the Kahr is my back up and always goes. I like it so much that if my G19 ever goes down, I would buy a Kahr to replace it. |
| The kahr "bugs" that were in some of their polymer models are "gone". These darn little ultra quality handguns "work". I have always felt that "price" should not be a realissue when it comes to what one is going to carry. If it don't go bang every time, peddle it and move on.. |
| I dont know about the polymer gun issues being gone. Took a new cw40 to the range yesterday and the pistol locked open on every shot fired. I got to looking at it and the little spring that keeps the slide lock in place was also pusing up on the slide lock causing it to catch each time the gun was fired. I got to looking at the manual and it looks like they took the spring from a different series of gun and installed it in this pistol. |
| my bet is that that little spring is under the slide lock nob instead of on top of it. the spring pulls the slide lock down all the time. It is the power of the magazine that lifts the slide lock up. check that out. very easy to check, just reinstall, and take the magazine out and run the sldie back, if it is in wrong, it will slide the slide lock up and it should not move with the magazine out. Just relocate where the slide locks meets witht he spring and you should be good to go. |
The little spring was bent into the frame and was running under the slide release. I fixed the spring with a pair of needle nose pliers. |
well did that solve your issues?? also, oil always that slide release lever, for if you notice it is actually two peaces. the round pin that goes through tot the other side is one peace and the slide lock lever is another peace. After awhile that slide lock lever will actually be free of the pin and freedom of movement is good.(the pin will rotate and the lever will not move) That is why that little spring is there to keep the slide lock lever down, as it is really not permanetaly connected to the slide lock pin, which to me is great, for once it gets lossened up, ur magazine is only pushing up the lever and not the entire slidelock/pin. |
| super, it will only get better, keep it well lubed for at leat 500 plus rounds, once it gets broken in, you still need to keep it lubed but not running all over the place. When I go out to the range to shoot at lteat a 100 plus out of it, I relube the slide rails and fire away. they are marvelous handguns, when they get runnig right. Sometimes it does take alittle effore to get them right but once right, they will stay that way. glad u got it worked out OK. |
| I just sent mine in to have them look at it. Slide would drive fresh round from mag into the ramp/back of frontstrap . Same with three diff. factory and multiple brands including 115 fmj (Rem, WWB, Wolf). Have owned for at least 7 years with 3000 put thru it. Started in the past 100-200 rounds. Ejected cases were dented at the case opening. Will advise...... |

Did you ever decide yet? I do have a P45 with the DLC for carry. It is one hell of a pistol. Eats anything I feed it and hits where I'm wanting. Recoil is actually pretty light. Fits great in a 1911 Leather belt slide and conceals real well. Most of Kahr's problems were on guns much earlier in production than those that are on the market today. Buying a used one? Beware. Buying a new one? Go for it. You'll be glad you did. |
+10 on that statement. New ones now good to go. older models, one needs to know more..Again most of the older models was OK also. I really think we need to bury this horse and move on. those past issues are definitely in the past. kahr stepped up to the plate and addressed it. I don't hear of anyone having "real " issues today with any of the polymer models either. Most don't give the handgun the necessary 200 rounds to break in correctly.. |
Gone, no. Less frequent, maybe. My PM9 was purchased about a year and a few months ago and it had a bunch of problems. However, Kahr took care of it and it works very well after I got it back. In my experience, both personally and as a former gunshop employee, the polymer Kahrs do have a slightly higher likelyhood of reliablity issues than some other brands/designs (Glock, Sig, XD, HK). The Kahrs offer a lot of desirable characteristics and fix the few problems they do have. Thats good in my book. If I had to bet my life on a pistol straight out of the box (which is not a good idea) I'd go with something else. FWIW, I have 3 Kahrs and have no plans to get rid of any of them. The one that had the issue was PM9 w/DLC. |
