Hey fellas, just picked up a used XD-9 today and was wondering if there is anything I should be watching for on this used weapon?
I just cleaned it up and it was really dirty. It was holstered ALOT. The slide has about 50% of the black worn off. I think it was a Post-Ban weapon. It only came with 2 10 round mags and the slide looks to have a 2003 date on the inside. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance fellas. P.S. I will be taking it to the range tomorrow. |
| Some of the early models (pre 2004 or 2006) had a different coating finish that didn't hold up to well to carrying and the elements. Can't remember which year exactly. Basically if it was a around 2005 or before it might have the "old style" factory finish which didn't hold up as well. Other than that you should be good to go. |

You've got the old blued slide model. Springfield switched over to a Melonite finish in late '05/early '06. Before that, people were having problems with the old finish wearing off. IIRC Springfield was refinishing pistols that were produced with the old finish for free. If you contact Springfield and tell them your finish is worn off and you're concerned about rust, they might Gun-kote (I think they call it "Armory Coat") it for free if you send it back. Otherwise you could just keep it and shoot it. Both of my XD9s are pre-Melonite (but one if them is the stainless bi-tone model Pick up some 16 or 18 round mags and have fun! (I use my 10 rounders for mag change practice...feel less guilty about dropping my 10 rounders into the gravel ).Midway and Pistol Gear have factory 16 rounders for about $23-$24...more than what I paid for mine "back in the day", but about the best price going these days unless you find them on sale: http://www.pistolgear.com/products.php?id=50 http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowseProducts.aspx?pageNum=1&tabId=7&categoryId=15124&categoryString=10613***687***11341***10469*** Copes has the best price on the Mec-Gar 18 rounders as far as I can tell: http://www.copesdistributing.net/index.php?cPath=44_53 CDNN has a few mags for sale as well...sometimes they'll offer specials for free shipping and what not: http://www.cdnninvestments.com/springfield.html |

The old finish was not blued, it was a finish called Brunial, which as you can see, does not hold up well. I too have one of the old ones, and yep, the finish is badly worn. I wear it as a badge of honor.. :) Someday I will get it fixed. If it was shot a lot you might need a new recoil assembly. -Corn |

In addition to a new recoil assembly check the locking block for cracks. It would take a lot of +P+ ammo to cause a problem but it does happen. |

If you're concerned about the finish wear, send it to Robar. You won't regret it!!! About how much $$$ does work like that run, if you don't mind me asking?...I really like the look of that NP3 coating. |

Having the NP3 coating was $145 for the slide and internal components (including the barrel).
They're having a 15% OFF sale if they get your slide before June 30th. NP3 coating has a lifetime warranty against corrosion, peeling or flaking. 6 week turn around time is typical. Robar's June Specials Price List |
