I have an XD-40 that I acquired used. Up until today it has not had a problem, although this was it's third trip to the range under my ownership and I had never tried to shoot hollow points through it prior to this.

The ammo for today was Winchester Rangers 155 gr. ammo and Magtech FMJ. Here is what happened:

1. I started with a known good mag and the Ranger ammo. Gun would not feed all the way. The round would make it half way into the chamber and become stuck. If I pulled back slightly on the slide (just light backward pressure actually), then the round would straighten out go into the chamber. This happened on the first round consistently and then happened at least twice more for a 12 round mag.

2. I tried a new mag and a different known good mag. Same results.

3. I tried different ammo (Magtech FMJ), same results.

4. I had the ranger officer shoot a mag through the gun to make sure it wasn't because I was limp wristing or somethng. Same Results.

The range officer suggested that the chamber might need to be polished. I was initially wondering if the action spring needed to be replaced, but I guess if feels OK.

Any suggestions? I really like this gun and I want to get it running again.

How much oil do you have on this gun? One would be amazed what a bit of oil on the entire bbl & slide will do fo gun jamming issues, IMO.

I agree.
I have a 4" XD 40.  She'll eat anything (including rangers), but only if well oiled, otherwise, I get what you are describing.

I usually lightly oil my guns, but when this one started acting up I put several drops of oil on the action spring and on the slide groves. It didn't have any impact.

From looking at it when it jammed and operating the slide dry, I am certain that it is a case of the bullet either hanging up on the chamber some how or not stripping from the mag completely. I am leaning towards hanging up in the chamber.

XD40 Service or Subcompact?

Sounds like a weak recoil spring, to me.

Service.

I was thinking action spring too. Maybe I'll replace that first and then see how she does.

I have a full length guide rod, and 20# spring on my XD40 Service.  It cuts a little of the muzzle flip, and makes for faster follow up shots.  My XD has never failed, with a variety of ammo, using this set-up.  I got them here:  pistolgear.com  Don's guide rod and spring

Awesome.

It's pretty cheap, so I will try one out. Thanks!

No problem.  The 22# spring is pretty popular too, but I found it made the slide a little too hard to rack.  Not impossible, just harder than I felt it needed to be.  I'm pretty sure the weight for the factory captured recoil assembly is either 18 or 19#, in case you were wondering.

Is it just a drop in, or do I have to put it together? Or is it completely different from the current action spring/rod setup?

Drops right in, just like the stock assembly.  There is a bushing that fits in the end of the slide, under the barrel, to contain the rod.  The spring just slips ditectly on the rod.  Basically, you're going to end up ith a single recoil spring, and a full-length, one-piece guide rod, similar to the XD40 Tactical.  I'll try to post some pics, give me a moment:

The bushing is the thin ring around the rod.  It looks like a factory piece, the fit and finish are flawless.
XDTalk has an entire forum devoted to the Don's guide rod set-up.  Hope this helps out.
