I voted 1911 because the XD is overpriced. I guess it would be easier to answer if we knew what the purpose for the pistol will be. Is this for carry? Is this your first pistol purchase?

I have owned many pistols.  It would be for part time carry as I usually carry my .357 J-Frame.  It will also be a range gun.  I like 1911s but the XD felt great in my hand too.  I might be able to get one for law enforcement rate if my friend hooks me up.  I like the thought of more rounds when I CCW as I can't always carry a spare mag.  I am familiar with maintaining 1911s and I know parts are much easier to come by.  I like the lighter weight of the XD but the thinner profile of the 1911.  This is why it is tough for me.

i also liked the way the xd felt. i doubt my inexperience helps but im just offering my .02 i dont have any guns yet.... but my first purchase will be the xd. a friend of mine has both. he LOVES his 1911 and is fond of his xd. i havent had the privilege of shooting the 1911 yet, but when i get back i will.

Ipersonally have had bad luck with springfield 1911's while they do have good customer service they could never get my 1911 to shoot reliably i had 3 of them..my XD45 is an excellent gun, i wouldnt even bother with the trigger job it grows on ya

I have both and like both. I too would not have the trigger job done. I would just get the trigger kit from pistolgear and drop it in. That's what I did with mine and it really makes a big improvement. If you get the XD and plan to carry it you will want to look at the Crossbreed holsters. I have the Quik-Clip and it makes the XD disappear and is way more comfortable than I thought possible.

Don't know if this will help you but here in Indiana last weekend at the 1500 gun show the prices on the XD .45's was $469 at several different booths.....I know this because my brother ended up buying one.

I would get the trigger Job because it costs $170 to get Heinie sights installed  and $230 from Springfield for the same thing with the overtravel work and action job.

For a decent trigger job, I will second this.

That Loaded Black Stainless is mighty pretty though.. :)  I have both the Loaded and the XD, and personally, at least at this time, I still prefer to carry the 1911.  The main reason is that I am a much better shot with the 1911 than I am the XD.  I am improving, it just isn't there yet for me.  Also, having shot the 1911 for the majority of the time, I am still putting my thumb on the slide lock now and then, which causes it to not lock open on the last round.  I know, user error...

It is an XD45 4in.  I may consider the 5in.  I don't mind CCWing large pistols.  I'm a big guy and have CCWd a G21, HK45, a few 1911s, a G22, to name a few.

Go to a range that rents, see which one you shoot better.

If it's a draw, it's down to capacity vs. trigger. I'd lean towards the 1911 just because I don't personally like the XD.

I shoot both very well.  I tried my friend Pete's.  I just don't like his standard sights and would change them.

I voted for the XD45, however, I personally would keep it stock. I would maybe put some night sights on it, but other than that it is GTG. I would suggest either the 4" or 5" XD45 Compact. My dad has the 4" XD45 Compact. black, and it's very nice. I have a tac bitone XD45 and I love it as well. Save up after your XD45 purchase and then get the 1911 too!

I chose the XD..I have two 1911's  aS.A. milspec, and a older Kimber Custom Classic, I just bought the XD and really, I haven't fired it yet, I am however quite impressed with this pistol  (4"bbl service, .45). Stuffing 13 rnds of .45acp into a frame not much bigger than alot of 9mm's is very impressive. Going through the posts at XD talk forums one thing I noticed is there aren't nearly as many threads about failures to feed, fire, eject, parts breakages, etc, 1911's can be good or bad. I had a bad S.A milspec years ago, very poorly done piece, I actually cut my fingers racking the slide..shot low, bottom of slide could double as a boxcutter...it was soon traded. That was the bad, the good is another S.A. milspec,  bought slightly used for $375, 6 years later. it too shot low,  and had a breech face that needed cleaned up, as it had a ridge running through it. One side being about .008-.010 higher than the other. Pistol was otherwise very tight and very well fit up, this one was worth fixing up. S.A fixed everything under warranty actually going above and beyond what I was expecting, it's now one of my favorite pistols to shoot, very reliable as well, My point here, is that many production 1911's will need some tweaking to get them to run out of the box, This is not unusual anymore, and it's a dice throw as to what you'll get unless you can test fire first before buying. I'd say the majority of XD's will need nothing out of the box to get them to run, and any tweaking done is almost always optional. And, let's not forget, the XD has a lifetime warranty. Seeing how you work in LE, there may come a time where you may have to bet your life on it, choose carefully. If it's at all possible shoot both before buying. If my XD performs like I think it may, it'll probably be my "go to" pistol, pushing my Sig p-220 out of that slot...I am very impressed with it.

Edited to add..I shot my XD  on saturday (3/22) and it shot very, very accurately I was quite surprised, no major problems, only minor problems pistol did not my light loads, 200gr SWC, and Titegroup. (used in my 1911's) recoil spring in XD is 20# and loads could not cycle properly with that heavy of a spring. I'll work up another load for it. other than that, It was flawless, sights are dead on, The Sig just might get pushed into second place....

All the guys I work with that carry Springfield 1911's have had problems with them. One of the guys is on his 3rd, 3rd! Operator. He has had all sorts of FTF and FTE problems, broken parts and other nonsense.  Another of the guys has a Springfield slide and frame, everything else is now Wilson Combat. I asked his why he does not just get something deifferent and he tols me that he was in to the gun for too much money to get rid of it. I am of the firm belief that the the XD's are the only reliable out of the box Springfields I have ever fired.

i have 2 xd's and the mc operator neither of which have given me any problems. bu i know if they do that sa will take care of me and square me away. for what you want i would go with the xd, bu personally i am comfortable with the stock xd triggers, and i would skip the trigger work, they get smoother with use, and mine on both of my xd's are great.

This weekend I got to shoot a 5" Tactical XD-45 from the Springfield Custom Shop. They worked the trigger and it made me rethink 1911's all together! To be honest, the Custom Shop didn't do much more than work the trigger, install an overstravel stop, tighten the slide-to-frame fit and high-cut the front and back strap. To me, the trigger work made the pistol for me. It was more smooth than any 1911 I've shot in a long, long time.

ETA The Custom Shop also installed Heine tritium strait 8's.

I'm going for the XD 4" with the thumb safety most likely unless I can really fit the 5" in my holster comfortably.

FOR ME, Comparing those two weapons right now, I'd go with the XD.

That said, I will someday get a showpiece or custom 1911, because every American should have (at least) one 1911.

My 2 cents

The only correct answer of course, is to get both:

I have both.  The XD has the Springfield Armory Custom Carry upgrade with the Trijicon sights.  The Loaded is the SS with the target sites.  Both are great pistols.  The XD is my "under the bed" for things that go "bump" in the night gun.  In my opinion, the XD is accurate, but the Loaded is "scary" accurate.  It just fits my hand better, feels better, shoots better.  Shoot both if you can so you can judge.  Either way, they are both great pistols.

My first pistol was a Kimber Tac Pro II and I really liked it.  Got turned on to the XD's, next gun show, sold the Kimber and bought 2 XD's.  I LOVE 'em.

Big clincher for me :  Get a dirty 1911 and a dirty XD.  I'll time you on how long it takes to break down each one and clean it.  XD field strips faster than Pamela Anderson can say "I do".

1911's Rock, but for me, XD's Rock - Nugent Style.
