I am looking at purchasing either a Springfield XD 45 4 inch or a Glock 21. I haven't had a chance to shoot either one yet but having held both models in my hand the XD fits me better. The grip on the Glock seems a bit big for me. As far as I know we will not be getting the Glock 21SF anytime soon and the frame is about the same size. Anyone have trigger time with both who can give me pros and cons. If you only have experience with one or the other is also fine. Thank you in advance. ETA: spelling Is there a difference between the Service and Compact models? Are both 4 inches? |
| xLucidx thank you for replying. I own a Glock 17 so I am familiar with the action and how it feels. I held both models (re: XD 45 and Glock 21) but the grip on the 21 is the only thing holding me back (too thick compared to Glock 17 or XD). I should see if my local shooting range has XDs I can try out. I do worry about keeping a round in the chamber of the Glock but if you practice enough it shouldn't discharge. I mean LEOs carry Glocks everyday and I haven't heard any ADs or NDs. At this point though I am kind of leaning with the XD. I will take what you have said into consideration though. I have a G21 and two XD .45's (one service, one tactical). Although there are many things I love about the Glock, such as simplicity, parts availability, mags slightly cheaper most places, and the ease with which I can install night sights..... I have to say the XD's edge it out by handling better and being better shooters (at least, for me). It's a tough call, but in the long run unless it will be a very high volume range gun (if that is the case, get the G21 because you can work on it easily in the rare event you need to), my vote is for the XD for defensive use. Now, I only think this way for the .45ACP guns. When it comes to 9's and .40's, the Glock is still my preference over the XD's. My $0.02. |
I have to rate USPs (I own a USPf and USPc) and 1911s (I own a Springer Loaded) as tops when talking about .45 caliber pistols. But if I want an everyday use and abuse pistol I might have to get a Glock or XD.

| I have both, I love glocks but I would take my XD over my 21. I like the 21 alright, it has been accurate and reliable but its big. My finger barely reaches the trigger, I shoot it ok but the gun feels like its going to jump out of my hand. The XD in my hands is more accurate, just as reliable, and a whole lot easier to hang on to. My stumpy fingers just like the XD better. YMMV |

its down to what fits you pros on the XD (for me and many): -great ergos and trigger contour--it just fits better h/w, i went back to the glocks, for several reasons: more, cheaper, available parts (this is what made me trade my XD in, parts are only available from SA and they have to install  ), mags, and accessories, less parts overall, shorter trigger reset, and i standardized

Yup - G21 until I see an XD do that, and I like pistols with a low bore axis anyway. |
Wow talk about hard core testing. I would never treat my Glock like that but now I know why they are so reliable. |

Oakland police officer shoots his leg Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer Thursday, December 1, 2005 An Oakland police homicide investigator accidentally shot himself in the leg Wednesday night but was expected to recover, police said. Sgt. Tony Jones was taken by ambulance to a hospital after the 8 p.m. incident at Oakland police headquarters at 455 Seventh St. Police officials were not immediately available to discuss the shooting, but an officer said Jones' injuries were not life-threatening. Jones most recently investigated the controversial in-custody death of Patrick Gaston, 34, on Nov. 10. Relatives accused police of beating him to death, but autopsies have determined that Gaston swallowed a sandwich bag filled with narcotics and apparently choked to death as he struggled with officers trying to handcuff him, police said. OPD is issued Glock 22 pistols. Even trained professionals can make mistakes, to me its not the pistol but the operator. |

For me, the comparison between Glock and XD came down to the grip and price, I like XD's ergonomics better than Glocks and XD's seem to be less expensive. With that said, I am impressed with the torture test of the Glock. I have never seen a test that extensive. I have seen at least two torture tests of the XD to the 20,000 round mark which the XD passed. Hope that helps. -huskAR |

i have had an xd45 since they first came out. the gun has been flawless. the grip is the EXACT same size as my xd 9mm. better ergonomics with a better grip angle for most shooters. addition of the grip safety is something i like standard rifleing, which means you CAN shoot lead if you reload. better chamber support means less likelyhood of a serious failure. IMHO this gun is what the glock SHOULD have evolved into. they took the best from several platforms and made a damn fine handgun. |
