I don't know if its an issue or a "feature" but ever since new my XD40 4" has had a tough time releasing magazines.  I have to REALLY press the release to get it to disengage the mag.  Its much easier to press it when I push up on the magazine slightly, so it seems like the catch on the mag is off a bit.  I've had this pistol since 03 maybe and they are 10rd mags.

Anyone else have this "issue?" Can I (should I) file the hole in the magazine down a little to see if that would help?

Has anyone tried any aftermarket sights for their XD that they would recommend over the standard 3-dots.  Fiber optic?  I kind of want to try a plain black rear (10-8 when that comes out maybe?) with the dot or an FO front.  Anyone have that set up?

I have noticed the mag release to be hard too. If you have a full mag its really hard! I think thats just the nature of the beast. I noticed when you push the release in it somewhat twists upward.

Personally I would not file anything but to each his own. I found that pushing the release with my middle (or index) finger of my shooting (right) hand is easier and faster for me. If I use my thumb, I have to twist my hand around the grip then back.

As far as sights.... Have a pro put them in that has the best equipment. I hear the factory XD sights are TIGHT!

Ummmmm..... is this with the mag empty that this is happening???  With a loaded mag, you are fighting the tension put on the mag by the rounds in it pressing up against the slide.

Mine is tough with a full mag; drops free without problem when empty.

The reason is two fold. First, with a full magazine, you have the tension of the bullets pushing up against the bottom of the slide making the button harder to depress. Second, the button is really to short, and that makes it worse. Try installing an extended mag release button such as Springer Precision sells. You will find it is much easier to depress the button and release the magazine, full or otherwise.

I have a set of sights coming from SureSight . I saw some on a friend's Glock and was so impressed with them I ordered a set that evening.

Sure, if you want to ruin the mag and/or the gun.......................

Most semis WILL have stouter release issues with a full mag & a closed slide.

I'm not really worried about it, I noticed the same "problem" with my XD-45 and XD-40, but since I don't plan on dropping a loaded magazine it's not really an issue for me...I just figure on shooting it empty THEN reloading

I'm looking at the setup and there's no way you're going to ruin it by polishing that locking lever. I wasn't implying anything be ground down. fluff and buff

Well I just "ruined" my XD45 with a dremel Mag release is nice and smooth now, even with a full mag.

I don't recommend this for everyone, getting the spring back in was tricky but not nearly as bad as say getting the trigger spring back on a Witness. Here's what I did.

1) Tap out the mag release pin from right to left. All the way out.
2) With a polishing wheel, polish the tab on the mag catch.
3) Polish the cam surface on the mag catch.
4) Polish the cam surface on the mag release cylinder. You really want to get at the surface near the "corner" of the bevel where it contacts the mag catch. To do this, you need a small diameter polishing "wheel". I used one of those "q tips" on wooden rods mounted on my Dremel (with polishing compound of course). Worked great.
5) Clean and lube the parts.
6) Now the tricky part. To get everything back in, first put in the mag catch only. Push the pin just far enough so that it will hold the left side of the catch.
7) Now push the spring under the catch with a small flathead screwdriver. Tuck it in there until you can push the pin through the coils.
8) Push the pin just enough to hold the spring but not enough to set the right side of the catch.
9) Press the mag catch down and push in the mag release cylinder.
10) Press the mag catch down and tap the pin all the way through. Done!

There you go, no more straining to eject mags
