Ok i am new to this forum and somewhat  new to guns. I have shot a lot but have never owned my own. I am going to be getting a handgun in the next few months. I am looking at getting either a .45XD or a mil spec 1911. I know that the xd is a good gun and everyone on here likes it but what about the mil spec 1911?? it will be used for a carry gun as well most likely. i want to get a full size 5 inch barrel. give me some opinions and pros and cons of both please. Thanks for the help.

i've never touched a XD, but i have a mil-spec and love it. from what i understand about an Xd, its a totally different animal from a 1911 style pistol. its going to depend on what you want? I like single action pistols like 1911's. most people that get mil-specs are pretty happy with them. mil-specs= not to be confused with GI mil-specs.

[edt] after doing some reading, i see the XD's are single action also, for some reason i thought they were like a glock, double action only. i think i will be checking these out. might be converted from being a 1911 guy. no, i really like the 1911 platform, but its not for everybody. see if you can rent both from a range and try them both out.

welcome to the site!

well first off, which one feels better to you>?  try to try em both in your hand (shoot em if you can!) and see which one just feels natural

i do not have a SA mil-spec, but i have shot em and i own both SA's Loaded and Loaded Champion as well as 3 other top 1911s; 1911s just feel good in the hand for me
the classical, all metal feel and you cant beat a single action 1911 trigger (imo)!

h/w, the XD line (i have shot several, but do not own any--i get glocks) is also a fine HG, but if feels different in several specs to a 1911, including: a plastic feel, a different trigger (pull and contour), but they are very natural and fitting HGs
recoil in both is very easy (imo)

does CA have a hi-cap mag ban still?

I have an XD 9mm and I like it, and I also have a mil-spec.  My only complaint about the mil-spec is the tiny sights.

ok thanks for the opinions. I am not sure wether ca. has a ban on hi capacity mags. and what they consider hi capacity. 10 + maybe. I will have to find out. I am kind of leaning toward a 1911 right now. In the next few weeks i will go to the local range and rent them and get the feel. thanks and keep it coming.

The XD is pretty much ready to go when you get it. Most people find the GI/Mil-Spec 1911 to be a little barebones for carry without modification.

I have a XD and a G.I. which is very similar to the mil-spec. 1911s are fantastic pistols and so ar the XDs. It realy depends on what type of pistol you are looking for. XD has 13rd mags that fit flush and the 1911 has 8rd mags that will fit flush or 7rd mags. The 1911 is a true single action and the XD is not quite the same trigger pull as a 1911. The 1911 is a little thinner and has a smaller grip and you can dress them up however you want and parts are very easy to find. For me the XD service .45 is a better carry pistol however the 1911 is more accurate alos. The reason I prefer the XD for carry is the mag capacity, mine has been reliable with every type of ammo I have used it it, I can carry it ready to go without manualy cocking it or flipping a saftey. Some people do not like the fact it has no manual saftey so they do not use it. It just depends on what you are looking for. It is not realy an issue of which one is junk and which one is good but a matter of what type of handgun do you want with what features.
