anyone know where i can get an XD sight tool from? my factory sights have gone to crap, and i got a good deal on a set of meprolights, but the "universal" tool i tried can't get down past the radius, a glock tool won't clear the slide, and i'm not about to pound in a new set of night sights with a hammer and punch... any help would be greatly appreciated. ETA: am i stuck ordering one from springfield for like $150 to use once? |
DON'T USE THE HAMMER AND PUNCH!!!! Use a cutting torch instead. Sorry, could'nt resist.Honestly, I don't know other than sending the slide to Springfield or a Gunsmith. Too bad the Glock sight tool won't work. There's got to be a few guys around here that's changed out sights. |

Go to the bottom of the page to see the sight pusher....a little pricey. Sig's sight tool works too...sigs and xd's use the same style sights. XD Sight Tool Lex in NC |
geez, you weren't kidding about pricey. i could buy another XD for less... |
| A well known XD gun smith gave a demonstration to a group I am in, and told us not to waste our time on sight pushers because they dont have a decent one for the XD anyway.... he changes out sights daily on XDs and showed us that he just uses a BRASS punch and ball peen hammer. on both the front and rear sights you need to tap from the ejection side of the gun towards the side of the gun where the slide release lever is, because they are factory installed in the opposite direction and you want to back them out..... on the front sight, when and if you use this method, place the punch on the post itself and not the base, because the more you hit the base, the higher chance there is that it will expand or deform and make it harder to get out... |
| I put on a set of Trijicons on my XD9 last week using a brass punch and hammer. I secured the slide in a vise, put some kroil on the dovetails and just pounded away on the sights, not the base. I started by using a nylon punch but could not transfer enough energy. It broke. The brass punch worked fine. They were in tight but eventually came out without damaging the slide or the stock sights. Take your time and it will work fine. |
thats insane |

the Sig classic pusher can install new sights. but...the factory XD rear sight is WIDER than the slot in the Sig pusher, so in order to remove the factory sights, you either need to punch the rear, or grind a tiny amount off the pusher so it can fit onto the factory rear sight. the link to hs2000 forums discusses how much material must be removed from the pusher. |

Whats more insane is that Brownells sells the same pusher for more than I do, my price is cheap compared to other places. But As was mentioned....... If he already has the Meprolight universal use the #3 block side and the slide will fit into the tool. The slide will fit into the Movable portion of the tool. Also always position the slide to push the sights into the Movable portion of the Vise. And the real hint as was said I install/remove these sights everyday and I use a ball peen hammer and punch to remove the sights. Then fit the new sight to the particular dove tail and push them in with the pusher. One day I will get around to making a move to show the whole process. But hey I am updating my website so it is a start. |
Sorry, could'nt resist.
