I've been thinking about getting the 4" XD 40 soon and I've noticed that the XD 40 is a 12+1 setup and the XDM 40 mags are 16+1 in the chamber.  That's all that has been "obvious" to me and I'm sure there are other differences, though they may or may not warrant spending an extra ~$75+ on the XDM model depending on what you are looking to get.

One of the differences is the XDM has a match barrel and the standard XD doesn't. I own a sub compact XD .40 and a XDM full size in .40 and love them both. Oh, and the mags can not be interchanged between the XD and XDM.

I'm considering the same thing...I have a XD sub compact .40 too...is the XDm noticeably fatter (more width) than the XD?

Between my XD9 and XDm9c, no.

I'm pretty sure you don't have to pull the trigger to field strip an xdm, but you have to with the xd.

Correct. I was so used to having to pull the trigger on my XD that I was surprised when my XDm slide fell off before pulling the trigger. Thankfully I was doing this while sitting on a carpeted floor. Personally, this "feature" makes no difference to me. YMMV

Personally I love my XDM. I have had an XD 9 Service and I loved it too. However, I like the fact I get better accuracy out of the 3.8" barrel as I did out of the longer 4" barrel on the service model because of the match barrel. I like the fact the slide is easier to take off without having to pull the trigger. Not a biggie just aggravation to do. I like the fact the slide is narrower than the XD's. It has a tapered angle that shaves off weight as well as size.It has serrations on the slide for getting a better grip than the XD. It holds 19 +1 rounds instead of 16+1. It has adjustable backstraps unlike the XD. I've found it to be a more adaptive gun. Although I wish I had waited and got the compact version with the extended and shortened mags I still love my purchase.

If it ever gets old or doesn't perform I'll just fall back on my Kimber Eclipse Target II.LOL

Trigger reset is night and day between the M and regular models.  I can take my XDm and do rapid fire strings or double taps with ease, but if I go back to the XD after the XDm I usually short stroke after the first shot with the XD and have to regroup and release the trigger more in order for it to fire.  After the first round it's no big deal as I adjust but it is a difference in the two.

I am not sure I buy the hype into the match barrel though.  A true match barrel will have to be fit by a smith.....I don't think they are doing that in Croatia.  I do however agree they use a better barrel but definitely not true "match" quality.  I would have to see both shot from a vice before I would give it any merit.  YMMV

I prefer the XDm for a few reasons:
Capacity - best reason, IMO
Trigger - might have been the guns I shot, but the trigger was much smoother on the XDm
No need to pull the trigger to disassemble - not a big deal, but YMMV
Swappable back straps - may not be a big deal to everyone, but I like it (also on my S&W M&P)

The match grade barrel is neat, but from a self defense standpoint, the regular model provides adequate accuracy (I don't have enough data to quantify the difference I saw).

I'd stick with either all Ms or none though; as mentioned earlier, "less chance of an equipment snafu/wrong mags!"

Agreed.  I also like the rear sight better on the M models.

I can only speak for myself, but if I look back at the guns, equipment, reloading gear and components purchased over time in this hobby that we all love ,the difference in price in price between the XD and XDM is equal to only a small amount of ammo! Springfield has had a LOT of time to improve and REFINE their excellent XD pistol=MO Bettaa.JB

To be honest, you can't go wrong with either an XD or XDM.  Go to a store and lay one on top of the other, and you will notice that they are almost the exact same base size.  The XDM "extras" are nice, but not necessary.  I personally like the fit and function of the XDM and accessories more than the XD.  I'll be selling my XD9SC to fund the XDM9C I just purchased.  Go with what feels best to you.  I will say that it is nice to have all your magazines in the same "family" ie: all xd or xdm.  Whatever you decide, happy shooting!

Having done a bit of research on the XD vs XDM , I have concluded that I like both of them and really cannot find anything that makes me desire one over the other so it came down to price for me. I found a deal on XD40 OD Green with black slide that I didn't want to pass up. Should be able to pick it up next weekend.

I have an XDM .45 and the mags are interchangeable with the XD and the XDM I would also assume that the other calibers are also interchangeable.  Just my $0.02 though!

IIRC, the XDM .45 was the last of the Ms to come out, and they kept the mags the same between the XD and XDM .45.  The other calibers aren't the same way.

Someone will be along shortly to tell me I'm an idiot

Nope, you are right.

For me,I had a LOT of trigger time on the XDs,and already had 4 of them. When the XDm came out I got to shoot one,and I really didn't see all that much difference when shooting,so I didn't see a need to change what was working for me already.

I used to have an XD.
I was sitting on my couch the day I got my XDm showing it to my buddy. Racked the slide back, locked it, flipped the lever up, hit slide release. Slide shoots up and off the gun and puts a dent in my new hardwood.
At least the experience made me look smart though.
